PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between James Howlett (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bryce Sharkey (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sharkey tries to score a power double leg takedown but Howlett sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Sharkey somewhat.
Howlett could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Howlett takes the fight into the clinch.
Sharkey is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Howlett pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Sharkey jumps guard but Howlett turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
James Howlett has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Bryce Sharkey.
Sharkey is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Howlett to keep the fight standing.

Howlett decides to pull guard.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Sharkey looking to sit in guard and control but Howlett gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Sharkey misses with a takedown attempt - Howlett sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

and Howlett counters with a good, hard body kick but Sharkey shrugs it off.

Howlett has Sharkey up against the cage in a clinch.
Sharkey is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Howlett works for underhooks and lands a body shot in the process.

Howlett breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Sharkey jumps guard but Howlett turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

Sharkey is fighting off a takedown attempt but Howlett is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Sharkey to the mat. Sharkey regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Howlett is pushing down on Sharkey's leg trying to pass to half guard. Sharkey is fighting to maintain full guard but Howlett has managed to sneak the leg through.
Still in half guard, Howlett seems content to control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Howlett lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Sharkey really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Howlett. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Howlett throwing strikes here but Sharkey is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Howlett has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

We're going to have a standup here because James Howlett wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

Howlett drives through and clinches with Sharkey against the cage.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

That's time! Howlett's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Sharkey.

Howlett lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Sharkey.
Howlett digs a right hand underneath Sharkey's ribcage. Sharkey let out a lung full of air as it connected.

Howlett ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Howlett no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Howlett bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Sharkey's guard.
Sharkey is breathing heavily.
Howlett not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Sharkey has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Howlett has passed into side control.

Sharkey parries the strikes from Howlett easily there. Howlett is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Sharkey to escape.

James Howlett overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Sharkey takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.

Howlett decides to stand up, so the ref orders Sharkey to his feet.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Howlett turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Howlett manages to end up in side control.
Howlett is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Sharkey can do to turn this around?
This has been an exciting period of action!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Howlett thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Howlett's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Sharkey swats away the attempt to clinch by Howlett.
Howlett connects with a leg kick. Sharkey looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.

and Howlett counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Howlett throws a head kick that half lands.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Sharkey takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Nice body punch from Howlett - that landed with a thud.

Sharkey is rocked!


It looks like Bryce Sharkey has been cut.

Howlett pulls guard.
Sharkey is still in real trouble! Can Howlett finish him?
Howlett manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Sharkey manages to get himself to full guard.

Howlett drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Howlett jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Howlett keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Sharkey's head.
Howlett passes into half guard.
Howlett has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Howlett unloads with some vicious shots from mount and Sharkey wants out - he looks towards the referee who steps in to save him! Howlett celebrates on the cage and the crowd goes wild!
