PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Ken Askren (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Diego Carlo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Ken Askren!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Diego Carlo!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Carlo checks the leg kick nicely there.
Askren misses with a head kick.
Askren misses with a looping left.
Carlo tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Askren manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Carlo moves away from the strike by Askren.

Carlo closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Askren wants to control but Carlo is keeping busy.

Carlo is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Carlo wants to take a breather but Askren is having none of it.
Askren trying to keep hold of his opponent's head but Carlo manages to pass to mount!
Askren regains half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Askren is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Askren is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Carlo jumps into side control!
Carlo is looking to take a break and control but Askren is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
An elbow from Carlo crashes against the mat.
Askren gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Askren looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.

Carlo tries to stand but can't do so whilst Askren controls his leg.

Carlo is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Carlo seems to be working for a kimura but Askren defends the submission attempt.
Carlo prevents Askren from improving his position.

Askren tries to roll over but Carlo keeps him under control.
Askren wants to control but Carlo is keeping busy.
Askren manages to get to full guard.
Askren has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Carlo has passed into side control.

Carlo swings around for an armbar but Askren sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Carlo's guard.
Askren trying to control the position from guard on top but Carlo is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Askren stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Carlo swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Carlo wants to sweep here but Askren controlling him for the moment.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Carlo can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Askren controls the pace.
Askren tries to free his leg and advance position but Carlo is retaining full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Ken Askren will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Askren fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Carlo manages to avoid it.
Carlo defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Askren.

and Carlo counters with a slapping leg kick.
Carlo avoids the head kick by Askren.
Askren fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ken Askren. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Carlo throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Askren tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Carlo is in Askren's guard.

Diego Carlo has got the better of the ground game so far.

Askren works a leg free and moves into half guard.

Askren is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Carlo doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Askren.

Askren is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Carlo is just riding it out for now. Askren eventually gives up the hold.
Carlo wants to get back to full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Carlo pushes Askren off looking to stand but Askren dives back in and keeps control.
Askren wants to lay and pray for a moment but Carlo keeps working.
Carlo is looking for a sweep. Askren is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Askren wants to control but Carlo is keeping him busy.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Ken Askren just wasn't active enough.
Askren tries a head kick but it misses.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Carlo closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Askren is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Askren manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Carlo is breathing heavily.
It looks like Carlo is going to stand back up.
Askren gets back to full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Askren looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Carlo is defending well. Askren quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Carlo has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Askren celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:58 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Ken Askren!
Ken Askren seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
