The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Machida shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Oliveira sprawls well. Oliveira wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Machida gets slowly back to his feet.
Oliveira pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Machida shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Oliveira buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.

Oliveira throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Machida takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.

Oliveira goes for a high kick. It partially lands.

It looks like Jhon Machida has been cut.
Machida could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Machida shoots for a double leg takedown but Oliveira sprawls well. He's pushed Machida's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Machida throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Oliveira's waist but Oliveira gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Machida off to one side.
Machida closes the distance and clinches up with Oliveira, looking for a takedown. Machida pushes Oliveira against the cage but Oliveira circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
No luck for Machida with that takedown attempt.

Oliveira breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Machida ducks right into an uppercut from Oliveira.
Oliveira lands a really nice looking cross but Machida seems unphased.

Machida drives through with a takedown into Oliveira's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Machida thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Machida is pushing down on Oliveira's leg trying to pass to half guard. Oliveira is fighting to maintain full guard but Machida has managed to sneak the leg through.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Machida wants to work for an arm triangle but Oliveira is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
