PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Steve Cox (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Coors Light (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cox comes to the cage accompanied by Seventeen - Sex Pistols. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Coors Light was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Steve Cox!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Coors Light!
The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Wesley Smith and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Light throws a right and a left that Cox avoids nicely.
Cox swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Light lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Light.
Cox tries to clinch but Light moves away
and Light counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Cox is lucky that one didn't land flush.
Cox throws a head kick but Light moves out of range.
Light rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Cox moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Light misses with a two punch combination.

Light moves into the clinch successfully.
Cox wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Light is trying to push Cox away but Cox has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Cox definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Light wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Cox has Light pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Light manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Cox blocks a punch to the side of the head.

Light breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Light throws a right and a left that both miss.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Cox closes the distance but Light moves to the side
and Light counters with a one-two to the body.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cox fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Light is out of range.
Cox leaves Light with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

and Cox counters with a shoot takedown. Light fights it but they end up in guard.
Light looks winded!
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Cox missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Cox wants to pass the guard but Light is keeping the position.
Cox stays in close to Light's body and controls the position.
Cox throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Light works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Cox trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Light wants to get back to his feet but Cox passes into half guard.
Cox not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Cox is controlling the pace.
Cox missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Cox is keen to just control but Light is a slippery customer.

Cox is looking for a kimura but Light is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Cox to get the leverage.
Cox is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Light is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Cox scores with a couple of nice shots.

Cox is working for a submission of some sort.

Cox is trying to work for a kimura but Light is defending well.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Light is trying to stand.

Cox is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Light defends it well.
Cox throwing shots but Light is blocking nicely.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Light blocking the ground and pound attempt from Cox.
Cox wants to pass the guard but Light is defending well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Light shoots in for a takedown but Cox shows good takedown defense.

Cox shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Light's guard.

Light wants to stand up but Cox is controlling him.

Cox throws an elbow that misses. Light uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Cox's guard. Nice move by Light!

Cox controls Light momentarily but Light frees himself.
Cox is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Light won't allow Cox to sweep him here.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Steve Cox.
Light tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Light throws a series of punches but Cox avoids them all with ease.
Cox fails with an attempt to clinch.
Light throws a head kick but Cox moves out of range.
Light is breathing heavily.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Light enables Cox to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Light manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Cox throws a big right hand that misses.
Light working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Cox.
Steve Cox overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Cox scoring with punches to the head and body.
Light can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Cox controls the pace.
Cox throws an elbow that misses. Light uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Cox's guard. Nice move by Light!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Cox looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Light wants to pass the guard but Cox is keeping the position.
Cox pulls Light in close to prevent any damage.
Light wants to control from the top but Cox keeps moving.

Cox looking for a sweep. Not yet Cox, not yet.
Cox on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Cox tries to get out of the position.
Cox is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Coors Light wasn't active enough on the ground.
Sloppy strikes from Light. Those never looked like landing.
Light fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Light swinging wildly here.
Cox jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Light looks to land a combination but Cox avoids it well.
Cox is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Cox ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Light moves away.

Cox tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Cox misses with a straight left.
Light blocks a jab.
Cox tries to close the distance and clinch up but Light swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Light throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Light throws a series of punches but Cox moves out of range.
Light has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight.
Cox moves in looking to clinch but Light pushes him off.

Light gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Cox is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Steve Cox dominated that second round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Cox throws a leg kick but Light sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Cox tries to close the distance and clinch up but Light swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Light misses with the combination.
Light looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Cox has taken the fight to the clinch.
Light has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Light gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Light thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Cox knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Light on the ground.
Cox makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Cox.
Cox is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

Cox is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Light takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Cox wants to sweep here but Light controlling him for the moment.

Cox is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Light is aware though and is defending well.
Cox has control of Light's left arm, preventing Light from doing any damage.
Cox throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Light throws a strike but Cox rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Cox is in close to Light's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Steve Cox is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Cox is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Light keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

Light throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Cox.
Horrible takedown by Light or perhaps it was just good defense by Cox which made him look bad.

Cox looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Light!
You can see the frustration on Light's face as Cox controls the position.
Coors Light has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Cox's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Steve Cox showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Cox, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
