PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Girevoy Khan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and David Paul (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Paul has chosen Lamb of God-Omerta as his entrance music. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Khan looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Paul!
Khan content just to control the position here.
Paul is squirming around, avoiding Khan's attempts to control the action.
Khan takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Khan throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Paul because Khan loaded up on that one.

You get the feeling that Paul really doesn't like being in this position too much.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Paul is trying desperately to improve position.
Paul bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Paul is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Khan wants to control from the top but Paul keeps moving.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.
Paul throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Paul misses with a straight right.
Khan fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Khan will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

The fighters circling - Paul throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Khan just misses with a punch to the body.
Some wild striking there from Khan.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Khan.
Paul takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.

Khan feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Khan shoots for a double leg takedown but Paul sprawls well. He's pushed Khan's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Girevoy Khan is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Nice combo by Paul! Oh, that's hurt him - Khan falls to the canvas and Paul follows him into side control.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Khan shoots in and bounces Paul off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Paul wriggles free and stands up.

Khan closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Paul pushes Khan off and gets back to his feet.
Paul lands with a thumping leg kick.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Paul throws a lazy right hand but Khan sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Paul lands a head shot.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Khan ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Paul moves away.

Paul takes one to the side of the head.
Nice sprawl there from Paul as Khan shoots in.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Girevoy Khan. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Khan misses with a double jab

and Paul counters with a flying knee that sends his opponent to the canvas! Paul looking to finish!

Khan seems to have got his legs back now.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Khan is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

David Paul showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Paul throws a sloppy head kick and Khan moves out of range easily.
Paul tries a head kick but it misses.
Paul will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Paul bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.

Khan lands a jab-cross combination.

Khan feints and as Paul raises his hands in defense, Khan changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Khan stays in close to Paul's body and controls the position.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Khan wants to pass the guard but Paul is keeping the position.

The strikes coming from Khan are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
I wouldn't like to be where Paul is right now.
You can see the frustration on Paul's face as Khan controls the position.

I would just about give that final round to David Paul.
I think Paul has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
