PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Kyros Sisyphus (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Denver Washington (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Washington's choice of entrance music: Gaff's Eulogy by Andrew Bayer. Denver Washington told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Kyros Sisyphus!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Denver Washington!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Reed Andrews and Steve Montenegro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sisyphus misses with a takedown
enabling Washington to counter with a crisp jab.
Sisyphus tries to score a power double leg takedown but Washington sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Sisyphus somewhat.
Sisyphus takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Sisyphus on the wrong end of a nice hook.
Sisyphus shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Washington defends it nicely.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kyros Sisyphus. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Sisyphus tries to close the distance and clinch up but Washington swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Sisyphus gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Washington counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Washington cracks Sisyphus with a right hand to the side of the head.

Sisyphus takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.

Sisyphus shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Washington counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
Washington throws out a powerful jab.
Washington throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Sisyphus on the side of the head.
Washington has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
Washington throws a head kick but Sisyphus moves out of range.
Washington connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Sisyphus's hands.
Kyros Sisyphus seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Sisyphus gets a takedown into half guard.
Sisyphus wants to advance to full mount but Washington doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.
Washington trying to control the position.
Washington wants to improve his position but instead Sisyphus has moved into half guard.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Sisyphus scores with a couple of good hammerfists.

Sisyphus seems to be looking for submissions.
Washington avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Sisyphus.
Sisyphus throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Washington to regain full guard.
Sisyphus stops Washington from standing up.
Washington wants to sweep here but Sisyphus controlling him for the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Washington is still trying to improve position.
Washington preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Washington looking for a sweep. Not yet Washington, not yet.
Sisyphus stops Washington from standing up.
Washington looking to hit a scissor sweep but Sisyphus is one step ahead there.
Washington wants to stand and escape but Sisyphus is having none of it.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Sisyphus accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Sisyphus with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Sisyphus looking to sit in guard and control but Washington gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Sisyphus thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

Washington wants to control from the top but Sisyphus keeps moving.
Washington controls from within his opponent's guard.
Sisyphus is looking to sweep but instead, Washington has passed into half guard.
Washington trying to pass the guard but Sisyphus defending well.
Washington tries to stand but can't do so whilst Sisyphus controls his leg.
Washington is trying to control. Sisyphus wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Sisyphus regains full guard. Nicely done.
Sisyphus seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Sisyphus throws his legs up looking for a submission but Washington uses it to pass to side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sisyphus tries to bench press Washington off him but Washington keeps the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Denver Washington dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Sisyphus shoots in and drives through. Washington sprawls well.
Sisyphus misses the shot to the body.
Sisyphus is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Sisyphus displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Washington throws out the jab.
Washington looks to throw the jab but Sisyphus is out of range.
Sisyphus shoots and misses
and Washington counters with a left to the body.
Washington scores with a sloppy right hand. Sisyphus should have avoided that one.
Washington uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
Washington ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Sisyphus moves away.
Washington lands a jab to the head.
Nice takedown defense from Washington. No joy for Sisyphus on that attempt.

and Washington counters with a straight punch to the midsection.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Sisyphus shoots for a takedown but Washington saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Sisyphus shoots in looking for a takedown but Washington manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Sisyphus's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Kyros Sisyphus is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Washington drops Sisyphus with a hook right on the temple. He thinks about going to the ground but Sisyphus looks back up at him and smiles so Washington waves him back to his feet - he obviously thinks he can knock him out after that shot landed.

Washington connects with a jab, followed by a picture perfect straight right that sends Sisyphus to the canvas, out cold! What a finish by Washington!

During a confident post fight interview, Denver Washington thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
