PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Brandon Connolly (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ron Paul (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Paul has chosen Revolution by Aimee Allen as his entrance music. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Brandon Connolly!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Ron Paul!
The judges for this bout are Wagner Zegers, Patrick Alders and Paulsen Ambrosius.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Connolly throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
A big right from Paul misses.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Paul has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Paul shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Connolly sprawls well. Connolly wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Paul gets slowly back to his feet.
Connolly lands a right hook to the body.
Connolly throws a leg kick but Paul sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Paul tries to clinch
and Connolly counters with a nice leg kick.

Paul closes the distance and clinches.
Connolly misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Paul.
Paul dodges an elbow strike from Connolly.

Paul breaks from the clinch.
Paul looks for a takedown but Connolly sprawls well.

Paul on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Connolly misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Paul.
Connolly misses with an elbow over the top.
Paul has Connolly pressed against the cage, preventing Connolly from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Connolly looking to throw knees to the head but Paul is blocking nicely.
Connolly lands an elbow inside.


It looks like Ron Paul has been cut.

Paul successfully pulls guard.
Paul is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Connolly trying to control the position from guard on top but Paul is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Paul lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Connolly!
Connolly wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Paul.

Connolly tries to lock up and control but Paul gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Paul lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.

Connolly regains half guard.
Paul seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

This has been an exciting period of action!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Paul stands up out of the half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Connolly's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.



Paul has taken the fight to the clinch.
Connolly wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Paul's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Paul takes a swing at Connolly's ribcage but misses.
Paul tries to clinch but Connolly is having none of it.
We've been told by Connolly's head coaches at Pacific MMA that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.

Paul closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Paul lands in his opponent's guard.
Ron Paul has got the better of the ground game so far.
Paul scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Paul is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Paul lands a couple of elbows.
Paul pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Connolly is keeping the position for now.
Paul not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Paul content to stall in guard here.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Ron Paul.

Paul shoots in and bounces Connolly off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Paul is fighting to break Connolly's control of his arms but Connolly is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Paul is in close to Connolly's body, working some short punches and elbows.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Paul passes into half guard.

Paul is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Connolly is just riding it out for now. Paul eventually gives up the hold.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ron Paul showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's time! Connolly's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


A clash of legs there as Connolly blocks the low kick.

Paul gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Paul on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Connolly creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.

Paul pulls guard effortlessly.
Paul is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Connolly is controlling him.

Paul pulls Connolly in close to prevent any damage.
Connolly looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Paul throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

Paul pushes Connolly off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

Paul fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Connolly, pushing him back against the cage.

Connolly manages to break the clinch.

Paul scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Connolly knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Paul on the ground.

Paul gets to his feet - back to striking we go!
Connolly uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Paul has time to react.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Paul closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Paul slows down the pace here.
Paul has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Connolly after a bit of a struggle.
Brandon Connolly has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ron Paul.

Paul pulls guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Paul tries to strike from the bottom.
Connolly won't allow Paul to sweep him here.

Paul is looking for a triangle but Connolly pushes his legs off easily.

Paul escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Connolly gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Brandon Connolly has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Paul working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Connolly doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Connolly manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Paul is on top in guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Ron Paul comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Paul winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
