The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Carter shoots for a takedown but Syed saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Syed tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Syed throws a sloppy head kick and Carter moves out of range easily.
Syed misses with a straight left.
Carter avoids the head kick by Syed.
Carter blocks a head kick by Syed.
Syed throws out a loose jab but Carter uses good head movement to avoid it.
Syed fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Carter manages to avoid it.

and Carter counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Syed!

Carter tries for a kimura but Syed is defending well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Carter is looking for a kimura but Syed is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Carter to get the leverage.

Carter is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Carter is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Balan Syed just wasn't active enough.

Syed throws a nice looking combination but Carter bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Syed lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Carter circles away quickly and effectively.

Syed throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Syed gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Carter to score an easy takedown into full guard.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Carter has gone for a leg lock! Syed slips out almost immediately though and dives into Carter's guard.
Syed wants to control from the top but Carter keeps moving.

Carter is looking for a triangle here but Syed uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Carter gets back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Rubin Carter will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Syed lands an elbow that stopped Carter in his tracks for a moment.

It looks like Rubin Carter has been cut.
Syed goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Carter is working for takedown but Syed is calmly controlling the position for now.
Carter drops down looking for an ankle pick but Syed pulls his leg out and moves away.
Balan Syed has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rubin Carter.
