PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Israel Whetu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Derrick Hornbach (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Whetu might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Gunz for Hire - The Massacre. The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The judges for this bout are Donatello Bradman, Darius Henderson and Skip Squint.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Whetu tries to clinch but Hornbach is having none of it.
Some wild striking there from Hornbach.
Whetu fails with an attempt to clinch.
Hornbach throws a right and a left that both miss.
Hornbach slips a jab and a cross from Whetu.
We've been hearing reports that Whetu has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Whetu shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Hornbach as he jumps to the side.
Whetu lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Hornbach circles away quickly and effectively.
Hornbach misses with the combination.
Whetu tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Hornbach misses with a few strikes there.
No joy there for Hornbach, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Hornbach swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Whetu is looking to clinch.
Hornbach throws a combination. Whetu tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Whetu shoots in and bounces Hornbach off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Whetu tries to free his leg and advance position but Hornbach is retaining full guard.

Hornbach really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Whetu. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Hornbach is pushing Whetu's head away, looking to escape. Whetu manages to hold on to the position though.
Hornbach bucks up and tries to throw Whetu off but instead Whetu has got his back!
Hornbach controlling the position well but he knows he's in a bad position.

Whetu is riding his opponent, not letting Hornbach buck him off.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Whetu lands with a nice looking elbow that stuns Hornbach.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Hornbach has the hand control, trying to stop the rear naked choke.

Whetu slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.

Whetu has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Whetu has good solid back control here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Whetu punches Hornbach on the ear.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Whetu cracks Hornbach with a big shot to body and one to the head - really punishing Hornbach from the back mount here, looking to soften him up.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Hornbach has the hand control, trying to stop the rear naked choke.
Whetu is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Whetu tries for a takedown but Hornbach sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Whetu shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Hornbach as he avoids it easily.

Whetu gets a clinch.
Hornbach tries to break the clinch but Whetu is controlling the position.
Hornbach wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Whetu has him pressed against the cage.
Hornbach looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Whetu has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Hornbach avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Israel Whetu. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Whetu misses with a knee to the head.
Whetu is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
Whetu keeps control of Hornbach as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
A head punch on the inside from Whetu fails to land.
Hornbach is trying to break the clinch but Whetu is controlling him.
Whetu wants to take the fight to the mat but Hornbach manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Whetu keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Hornbach's efforts to push away.
Hornbach has had enough of the clinch but Whetu keeps him there for the moment.
Whetu has Hornbach pressed against the cage, preventing Hornbach from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Hornbach tries to break free but Whetu pushes him back against the cage.
Whetu looking to stall.
Hornbach wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Whetu has him pressed against the cage.
It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Whetu here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.

Hornbach breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Hornbach lets his hands go wild with a nice combination. Left! Right! Uppercut! Spinning backfist! Whetu goes down and covers up as Hornbach starts wailing on him! The ref watches the action closely before stepping in and putting a stop to the fight!
