PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Jason Scott (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and BabyJay Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Scott kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is White Rabbit. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jason Scott!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, BabyJay Penn!
The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Roger Salmon and Colin Fray.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Scott counters with a nice uppercut.
Nice uppercut lands for Scott. That snapped Penn's head back.
Penn misses the shot to the body.
BabyJay Penn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Scott takes the fight into the clinch.
Scott is pushing Penn up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Scott lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Penn.
Penn dodges an elbow strike from Scott.
Scott controlling the action here for a moment.
Penn has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Scott is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Scott taking a breather.
Scott throws an elbow but it's blocked.
Scott lands with a short punch from the clinch.
Scott is defending well against a takedown attempt.
Jason Scott has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of BabyJay Penn.
Penn drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Scott has hold of one of Penn's legs. Penn is fighting the takedown attempt but Scott gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

Penn controls Scott momentarily but Scott frees himself.

Scott avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Scott pushes down on Penn's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Penn is not content to let Scott control the position.
Scott is looking to stand up but he'll have to free his leg first. Instead, Penn manages to get to full guard.

Penn has his foot on Scott's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Scott works his way back into a safe position though.
Penn looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.

Scott is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Penn is looking for a triangle but Scott pushes his legs off easily.

Scott pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Penn is keeping the position for now.
Scott is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Scott tries to free his leg and advance position but Penn is retaining full guard.
Scott lands a couple of elbows.
Scott engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jason Scott dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Penn fails with a takedown attempt.
Penn goes for a double leg but Scott avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Scott continues to drive forward.

Scott breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Penn shoots and misses

and Scott holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Jason Scott has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of BabyJay Penn.

Scott has clasped his hands together around Penn's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Penn is letting Scott control him for a moment.

Scott is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Penn is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Scott really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Scott wants to lay and pray for a moment but Penn keeps working.

Penn is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Penn manages to get to full guard.

Scott gets to his feet - Penn follows without any prompting.

Penn fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Scott avoids it really well and circles away.
Scott displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Penn.
Scott wants to clinch.

Scott closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.
Penn tries for a takedown. No joy.
Penn jumps guard but Scott turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Scott lands a right hand.
A nice left hand lands by Scott.
Scott lands with a light punch inside.
Scott scores with a nice hook to the head.
Scott lands a hook that snaps the head of Penn backwards.
Penn tries to pull guard but Scott holds him up against the cage and eventually Penn drops back down to his feet.
Scott misses with a punch on the inside.

Scott's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Scott closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Scott throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges.

Scott lands a takedown into guard.
Scott advances to half guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Penn tries to roll over but Scott keeps him under control.
Scott is controlling the pace.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Scott takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jason Scott dominated that second round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Penn ducks down and throws a hook to the body.

Penn gets a double leg takedown into Scott's guard.
Scott wants to get back to his feet but Penn is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Scott has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Penn slips nicely into half guard.
Scott preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
Scott is staying active underneath Penn, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Scott makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Scott.

Scott pulls Penn in close to prevent any damage.
Penn trying to control the position from guard on top but Scott is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
BabyJay Penn has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Scott wants to stand up but Penn is controlling him.
Penn trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Penn with a poor takedown
and Penn takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

Penn shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Scott is trying to defend but Penn finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Scott moves into full guard.

Scott throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Penn trying to control the position from guard on top but Scott is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Scott pushes Penn off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Jason Scott is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Penn drives through with a takedown into Scott's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Penn might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Scott haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
We've been hearing good reports from Scott's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Well Scott has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
