Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Matt Gracie!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jim Howard!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Don Winkell and Jack Bonds.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gracie slaps away a takedown attempt from Howard, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Gracie tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Howard counters with a shoot takedown. Gracie fights it but they end up in guard.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Gracie is trying to control the position but Howard postures up.
Gracie has his foot on Howard's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Howard works his way back into a safe position though.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Gracie controls Howard momentarily but Howard frees himself.
Howard must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Gracie is on top in guard.
Howard looks winded!

Howard is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Gracie accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gracie throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Howard works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Gracie wants to pass the guard but Howard is keeping the position.
Howard is trying to control the position but Gracie postures up.

Gracie stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Howard swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Gracie passes into half guard.
Howard has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Gracie is working away from the top position though.
Gracie not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Gracie seems to be working for a kimura but Howard defends the submission attempt.
Howard avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Gracie.
Gracie is pressing down on Howard's thigh, looking to free his foot. Howard is holding on for now.
Howard looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

Gracie is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Howard sees it coming and defends easily.

Howard keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Howard blocking the ground and pound attempt from Gracie.
Gracie tries to pass the half guard into mount. Howard knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Gracie thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Gracie wants to pass to mount but Howard is defending the position.
Howard wants to improve his position but Gracie is controlling well.
Howard looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.

Gracie not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Howard is defending against the submission attempts here by Gracie.
Howard is concentrating on defense, preventing Gracie from advancing position.
Howard is looking for a sweep. Gracie is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gracie is looking for a kimura but Howard is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Gracie to get the leverage.
Gracie takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Gracie frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Poor strikes thrown by Gracie there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

Gracie working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Howard looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Gracie! Submission of the night perhaps?
