PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jermain Leaseau (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Roman Volkov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Roman Volkov told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Jermain Leaseau!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Roman Volkov!
The judges for this bout are Winston Alpacca, Michael Johnstone and Dirk Anderson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A combination from Volkov does no damage.
Leaseau tries to clinch but Volkov moves out of range.
Good standup being displayed there by Volkov as he connects with a hook.


It looks like Jermain Leaseau has been cut.
Leaseau is trying hard to land a takedown here. Volkov sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Leaseau throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Volkov's waist but Volkov gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Leaseau off to one side.
Roman Volkov seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Volkov misses with a wild combination.

Volkov moves forwards but Leaseau connects with a nice, crisp jab.
A punch combination from Volkov misses.
Volkov cracks Leaseau with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Volkov throws a series of punches but Leaseau avoids them all with ease.
Volkov looks to score with a jab to the body but Leaseau is just out of range.

Leaseau tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Volkov defends well and Leaseau ends up having to push Volkov into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jermain Leaseau. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Volkov breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Leaseau shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Volkov as he avoids it easily.
Volkov tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Leaseau was well out of range. Poor timing from Volkov.
Leaseau moves out of range as Volkov strikes.
Leaseau looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Volkov is fending him off so far but Leaseau persists. Nope, Volkov circles away and we're back to standing.
Volkov uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
Volkov scores with a hook to the body. Leaseau takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Leaseau tries for a takedown but Volkov sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Leaseau takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.

Volkov throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Leaseau counters with a two punch combo.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Leaseau.
Leaseau takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
A looping hook to the body misses from Volkov. Leaseau does a little dance to reset his feet.
Leaseau tries for a takedown but Volkov sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
The crowd cheers as Volkov lands an impressive looking overhand right. Leaseau doesn't seem phased though.
Volkov stalks Leaseau and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Leaseau's face. Leaseau staggers backwards, shaken.

Leaseau fails in his attempt to clinch.
Leaseau misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Volkov misses with a series of wild punches.
Volkov throws a nice looking combination but Leaseau bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
This is turning into a torrid day at the office for Leaseau. He's trying desperately to land a takedown but he's failing miserably and getting slapped silly on the feet to compound his misery.

Volkov throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Volkov takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Leaseau tries to clinch up but Volkov circles away and keeps his distance.

Leaseau is looking to clinch.
Volkov misses with a jab, cross combination.

Leaseau closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Leaseau successfully pulls guard.
Leaseau has Volkov pulled in close to control his posture.
Leaseau bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Volkov's guard.
Leaseau controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Leaseau stands up over Volkov, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Volkov is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Leaseau is controlling him.
Leaseau working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.
Leaseau is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Leaseau paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
Leaseau changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Volkov tries to avoid it but Leaseau manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Volkov to the ground. Volkov escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Volkov moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
Leaseau avoids a punch combination nicely.
Volkov looks to land a right hand but Leaseau moved out of range.
Volkov throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.
Leaseau closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Volkov misses with a double jab.

Volkov feints a jab promting Leaseau to slip. Volkov then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Leaseau slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.

Volkov rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Leaseau moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Volkov is breathing heavily.
Leaseau misses with a takedown attempt - Volkov sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Volkov fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Leaseau misses with a kick to the body.
Volkov fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Leaseau manages to avoid it.
Leaseau throws a head kick that misses.
Leaseau tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Volkov paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Volkov tries to bum rush Leaseau with a series of wild strikes but Leaseau uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Leaseau misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

Leaseau takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Volkov misses with a few strikes there.
Nice uppercut lands for Volkov. That snapped Leaseau's head back.
Volkov throws a right hand that Leaseau ducks under and follows up with a left that Leaseau also avoids with ease.
Volkov throws the left hand but Leaseau avoids the punch easily.
Leaseau jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.
Volkov misses with a few strikes there.

Leaseau fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Volkov to the ground. Leaseau is now in Volkov's guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Leaseau's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Volkov can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Leaseau controls the pace.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Leaseau lands a couple of digs.
Leaseau scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Leaseau postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Leaseau slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Leaseau slows the pace down.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Leaseau lands a few punches from side control.
Leaseau trying to control the action but Volkov is working from the bottom.
Leaseau is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Volkov is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Volkov really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Leaseau. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Volkov seems a little lost for a moment, as Leaseau dominates the positioning.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Leaseau dodges the punch combination from Volkov.
Volkov swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Volkov takes a swing at Leaseau's ribcage but misses.
Volkov misses with a double jab.
Leaseau avoids a punch combination nicely.
Leaseau bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Volkov lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Leaseau circles away quickly and effectively.
Leaseau will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Volkov connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Volkov takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Volkov misses with a wild body shot.
Leaseau misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Volkov takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Volkov escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Donk. Volkov catches Leaseau right on the button with a cross.
Volkov misses with a series of wild punches.
Sloppy strikes from Volkov. Those never looked like landing.
Leaseau shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Volkov as he jumps to the side.
Leaseau tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Volkov manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Volkov slips a jab and a cross from Leaseau.

Volkov has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Leaseau jumps guard and drags Volkov to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Volkov wants to stand up, so he's looking to wriggle free of Leaseau's closed guard. He's half up but Leaseau has locked on to an arm! Uh oh! Leaseau pivots and extends the arm, Volkov falls face first to the mat and taps??... does he?? YES! He's tapping! Excellent counter grappling there by Leaseau! Well done that man!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:29 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Jermain Leaseau!
