PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Van Leeder (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Steve Staunton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Leeder comes to the cage accompanied by Pantera - Cowboys From Hell. Van Leeder had real problems making weight for this fight. After initially coming in at 186.7lbs, he had two hours to make the official fight weight. He made it but it will have taken a lot out of him to cut those extra few pounds. The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Van Leeder!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Steve Staunton!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Tiny Johnson and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice cross by Leeder.

Staunton drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Leeder prevents Staunton from moving into mount.

Staunton is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Leeder is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Leeder can't do much from the bottom here.
Leeder is trying to get back to half guard.
Staunton tries to advance to mount but Leeder denies him.

Staunton stands up and beckons Leeder to his feet.

Leeder moves into range and connects with a jab.
Leeder doesn't manage to clinch there - Staunton circles away.
Leeder misses with a wild combination.

Staunton has Leeder up against the cage in a clinch.
Staunton on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.

Staunton escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Staunton instigates a clinch.
Leeder is defending well against a takedown attempt.
Leeder lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.
Staunton tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Leeder just stands there and leans against the cage.

Staunton decides to pull guard.
Leeder trying to control the position from guard on top but Staunton is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Staunton misses with some strikes from the bottom.

Staunton is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Leeder pulls his head out easily.

Leeder misses with a head shot. Staunton uses the momentum to regain guard.

Leeder gets to his feet - Staunton follows without any prompting.
Leeder wants to clinch up but Staunton keeps it at a distance.

Leeder is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Leeder misses with a series of wild punches.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Staunton moves into range and clinches up with Leeder.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Van Leeder will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Leeder is trying to stall.
Leeder is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Staunton is defending well for now.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.
Leeder wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Staunton manages to break the clinch.
Staunton goes for a double leg but Leeder avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Leeder continues to drive forward.

Our sources have told us that Leeder has been working on his elbows in the gym.
Staunton is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Leeder to keep the fight standing.

Leeder using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Staunton has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Staunton is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Leeder can't fight it off and eventually Staunton manages to take the fight to the floor. Leeder looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Leeder is on top in guard.

Staunton is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Leeder is aware though and is defending well.

Leeder is stalling in the full guard.
Leeder will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Staunton throws a head kick that misses.
Staunton fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Leeder has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Leeder rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Staunton moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Leeder takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?

and Staunton cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Staunton tries to score a power double leg takedown but Leeder sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Staunton somewhat.
Van Leeder has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Steve Staunton.
Staunton tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Leeder swivels and escapes.
Leeder tries to close the distance and clinch but Staunton swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Leeder keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Staunton takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Staunton closes the distance and clinches up with Leeder, looking for a takedown. Staunton pushes Leeder against the cage but Leeder circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Leeder throws a nice looking combination but Staunton bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Steve Staunton showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

Leeder misses with a few strikes there.

Staunton shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Leeder sprawls well. Leeder wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Staunton gets slowly back to his feet.

Staunton wants to free his trapped foot but Leeder is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Staunton stops Leeder from getting back to his feet.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Staunton seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Leeder throws a series of punches but Staunton moves out of range.

Nice uppercut lands for Leeder. That snapped Staunton's head back.

Staunton forces Leeder back against the cage and clinches.
Staunton tries to score a body lock takedown but Leeder shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Leeder is trying to push Staunton away but Staunton has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Staunton jumps guard but Leeder turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

Staunton wants the takedown. Leeder is fighting it off but Staunton persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Leeder's guard against the cage.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Steve Staunton comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Staunton has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
