Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rhett Figueroa!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Apollo Mendes!
The judges for this bout are Felipe Paraventi, Seu Braga and Paulo Santos.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight.
Figueroa closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Mendes to the mat! Mendes manages to get full guard.
Mendes is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Figueroa is aware though and is defending well.
Figueroa is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Figueroa's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
We're going to have a standup here because Rhett Figueroa wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Mendes with a poor takedown
and Figueroa counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Mendes is pressing down on Figueroa's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Mendes is looking to cinch up a triangle. Figueroa throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Mendes's body to avoid the submission. Mendes has instead reached around Figueroa's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Mendes arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.
