PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Frederick Barbarossa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Burza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Burza has chosen Metallica - Enter Sandman as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. On his way into the cage it seems that Frederick Barbarossa has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Frederick Barbarossa seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 27 - 15 - 0, fighting out of London, Frederick Barbarossa!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 23 - 14 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, John Burza!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, James Ackerman and Paul Tew.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Left hook, right uppercut from Barbarossa.

Burza fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Barbarossa to the ground. Burza is now in Barbarossa's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Barbarossa has Burza pulled in close to control his posture.

Burza is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Barbarossa is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Barbarossa has escaped and now he's on top!
Barbarossa wanted to stand there but Burza had control of the position.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Barbarossa won't allow Burza to sweep him here.

Burza pulls Barbarossa in to control the position.
Barbarossa has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Our spies down at at Wax on Wax off 'Dojo inform us that Burza has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off?
Burza is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Burza is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Barbarossa is aware though and is defending well.

Barbarossa avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Barbarossa throws a shot from downtown. Burza moves away and avoids it.
Frederick Barbarossa is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Barbarossa throws a looping overhand right but Burza ducks down to avoid it.
Barbarossa throws a jab but it's blocked by Burza.

Barbarossa gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Burza to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Burza advances to half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well, if Burza is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Barbarossa is trying to stand up here but Burza is controlling him well.
Burza wants to lay and pray for a moment but Barbarossa keeps working.
Burza wants to advance to full mount but Barbarossa doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.
Burza sitting in guard here, content to control.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Burza is looking to advance position but Barbarossa has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Burza dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Barbarossa, as that shot connected.
Barbarossa throws a leg kick but Burza sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Barbarossa throws a right and a left that Burza avoids nicely.
Burza shoots in but Barbarossa avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Barbarossa scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
Barbarossa fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Barbarossa misses with the combination.
Burza keeps the fight on the outside.
Barbarossa takes a swing at Burza's ribcage but misses.
Burza shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Barbarossa as he jumps to the side.
Burza misses with a looping left.
Frederick Barbarossa is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Burza shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Barbarossa defends it nicely.
Frederick Barbarossa has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of John Burza.
Barbarossa fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Burza shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Barbarossa cracks Burza with a right hand to the side of the head.
Barbarossa misses with a double jab.

Burza darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Barbarossa has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Burza is working away from the top position though.
Burza seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Barbarossa does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Burza seems to be working for a kimura but Barbarossa defends the submission attempt.
Barbarossa wants to improve his position but Burza is controlling well.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Barbarossa is trying to maintain the position but Burza is very close to passing his half guard.
Burza tries to pass the half guard into mount. Barbarossa knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Burza stalling away here and it's allowed Barbarossa to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Barbarossa is on top in guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Burza wants to control from the top but Barbarossa keeps moving.

John Burza has got the better of the ground game so far.

Burza is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Barbarossa is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!

In his post fight interview, John Burza gave a big smile as he said 'I want to thank Feral Combat for this opportunity to fight for this belt and to be their champion. I plan on holding onto this belt for a long time.'.
