Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Mauro Stokes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jason Diego (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jason Diego has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Mauro Stokes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jason Diego!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Chris Dean and Winston Howard.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Diego instigates a clinch.
Diego is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Stokes is defending well for now.
Stokes jumps guard but Diego turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

Diego jumps guard and drags Stokes to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Stokes with a flurry of punches that miss.
Stokes in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Stokes missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Stokes could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Stokes throws a big elbow that misses.
Stokes postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Diego preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Diego seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Stokes might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Stokes accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Jason Diego was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Stokes moves out of range of the body kick.
Stokes fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Diego avoids it really well and circles away.

Diego is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Stokes's half guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Diego is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Stokes is just riding it out for now. Diego eventually gives up the hold.

Diego tries to pass the half guard into mount. Stokes knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

You can see the frustration on Stokes's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Diego working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Diego controlling the position from side mount.
Diego wants to stand but Stokes has his arm trapped.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Diego wants to lay and pray for a moment but Stokes keeps working.
Diego tries to advance to mount but Stokes denies him.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Stokes's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Stokes tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Diego shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Stokes but Stokes pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Stokes shoots in and bounces Diego off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Diego controls Stokes momentarily but Stokes frees himself.

Diego pulls Stokes in close to his closed guard and prevents Stokes from doing any damage or advancing position.

Stokes slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Diego is looking to chop away at Stokes's legs.
Stokes wants to clinch up but Diego keeps it at a distance.
Stokes tries to clinch there but Diego circles away.

Stokes shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Stokes was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Diego wants to control but Stokes postures up.
Diego tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Stokes wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Diego avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Stokes.
Diego wants to get back to his feet but Stokes drags him back down.
Diego is breathing heavily.
Diego dodges the ground and pound from Stokes.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Diego is trying to control Stokes's posture but Stokes avoids it.
Stokes creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Diego sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Stokes is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Diego knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Diego tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Diego managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Stokes.
Stokes wants to lay and pray for a moment but Diego keeps working.
Diego struggling a bit here.

Stokes working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Stokes cracks Diego with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Diego is trying to control Stokes's posture but Stokes avoids it.

Diego is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Stokes is staying active.

Diego is staying active underneath Stokes, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Diego throws a sloppy head kick
and Stokes counters with a two punch combo.
Stokes doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Diego counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Diego won't allow Stokes to get back to his feet.
Diego content to stall in guard here.
Diego's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Diego stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Stokes swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Diego is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Jason Diego.
Diego fails with the takedown.
Diego takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Diego shoots in and gets a takedown into Stokes's guard.
Diego engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

Stokes isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Diego stacks Stokes on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Diego!

Stokes is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Diego has just dragged him back down to the mat.

Diego connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Stokes some visible discomfort.
Stokes tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.

Diego content just to control the position here.
Stokes tries to lock up and control but Diego gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Diego goes for an armbar but Stokes turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Stokes.
Diego has his hands on Stokes's head, controlling the position.

Stokes is fighting to break Diego's control of his arms but Diego is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Jason Diego was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Diego pushes Stokes up against the cage in a clinch.

And that's the end of the fight!

I think Diego has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
