PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Michak Ropuia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Wing Wang (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Ropuia might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Here comes the pain - Slayer. Wing Wang acknowledges the crowd's support as he enters the ring.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Michak Ropuia!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Wing Wang!
The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Hirohito Nitta and Yukihiro Shimada.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Wang thows a left - swing and a miss!
Wang fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Ropuia fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Wang throws a series of strikes that have Ropuia backpedaling.
Ropuia closes the distance and clinches up with Wang, looking for a takedown. Ropuia pushes Wang against the ropes but Wang circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Wang leaves Ropuia with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Michak Ropuia. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Wang has closed the distance and engaged Ropuia in a clinch.
Ropuia is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the ropes enables Wang to keep the fight standing.
Wang using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Ropuia has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Ropuia jumps guard but Wang stands there with Ropuia around his waist. Ropuia gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Wang lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Ropuia backwards.

Wang escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Good standup being displayed there by Wang as he connects with a hook.

Wang attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.

Wang has managed to clinch.
Wang lands with a left to the head.
Ropuia jumps guard but Wang turns him against the ropes and keeps the fight standing.

Wang breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Nice sprawl there from Wang as Ropuia shoots in.
Ropuia is pinned up against the ropes taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Ropuia on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Ropuia misses with a takedown attempt - Wang sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Ropuia fails with an attempt to clinch.

Ropuia gets tackled into the ropes by Wang. Wang maintains the clinch.

Wang throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Ropuias head.
A short right hand to the side of the head by Wang.

Wang digs a right hand into Ropuia's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Ropuia's gas tank.

Wang breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Nice takedown defense from Wang. No joy for Ropuia on that attempt.
Ropuia darts in looking for a takedown but Wang gets double underhooks and turns Ropuia into the ropes.
Wang has been looking to improve his clinch game in recent weeks. So far he's outscoring his opponent in the clinch so it seems to have been worthwhile.

Wang breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Ropuia fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Wang throws a leg kick but Ropuia sees it coming and moves out of range.

Wang drives through and clinches with Ropuia against the ropes.
Ropuia tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Wang smiles and moves away.
Wang moves into range and connects with a jab.

Ropuia shoots in and gets a takedown into Wang's guard.

Ropuia thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Ropuia drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Ropuia jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Wang is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Wang looking to hit a scissor sweep but Ropuia is one step ahead there.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Ropuia stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Wang swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Ropuia is working hard here to advance position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Ropuia is pushing down on Wang's leg trying to pass to half guard. Wang is fighting to maintain full guard but Ropuia has managed to sneak the leg through.
Wang is looking to improve his position.

Ropuia is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Wang sees it coming and defends easily.

Ropuia is working for a kimura but Wang is defending it quite comfortably.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Ropuia is looking for submissions but instead, Wang has regained full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Wing Wang dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Wang scores with a one two! Ropuia had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.

Michak Ropuia seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Wang is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.

Ropuia goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Ropuia jumps guard but Wang turns him against the ropes and keeps the fight standing.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Wang is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Wang is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Ropuia stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Wang swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Ropuia drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Ropuia jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Ropuia has gone for a leg lock! Wang slips out almost immediately though and dives into Ropuia's guard.

Ropuia has his feet on Wang's thighs here. He's pushed Wang off and worked for a very quick armbar from the bottom! He's flipped onto his stomach and he's cranking hard on the arm! Wang screams in pain and taps out! This one is all over!

Our winner, Michak Ropuia, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
