PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Saint Pierre (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Evans (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pierre comes to the cage accompanied by Where is My Mind. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the fighters buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Saint Pierre!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, John Evans!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, William Peck and Alec Ball.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pierre lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
Pierre looks to land a combination but Evans avoids it well.
Evans avoids a punch combination nicely.
Pierre avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Pierre fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Pierre avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Evans tries to close the distance and clinch but Pierre swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Evans throws a left and a right that both miss
and Evans takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
A combination from Pierre does no damage.
Evans darts in trying to clinch
letting Pierre counter with a right hand.

It looks like Saint Pierre has been cut.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Pierre tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Pierre looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Pierre is thwarting Evans's attempts to control the position.

Evans tries to get to full guard but Pierre has control of the leg.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Evans is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Pierre pulls his head out easily.
Evans tries to roll over but Pierre keeps him under control.

Pierre is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Evans defends it well.
Pierre is breathing heavily.

Pierre escapes and gets back to his feet.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Pierre looks to land a combination but Evans avoids it well.
Evans shoots in for a double leg but Pierre sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Pierre takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
Evans looks to clinch

and Pierre counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Evans lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Pierre!
Pierre keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
The referee warns Pierre that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Pierre can't escape the position.

Evans is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Pierre can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Evans has hold of Pierre's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Pierre manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Evans cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Pierre is desperately trying to improve his position but Evans has a good base and remains in mount.
Evans lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Pierre hang on?
Evans is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Pierre tries to get back to half guard but can't.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Pierre is trying to stand but he's just given Evans his back.
Evans softening up his opponent with strikes here.
Evans biding his time, controlling Pierre.
Evans lands a shot to the body.

Evans is working hard for the rear naked choke here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Evans avoiding Pierre 's attempts to control his hands.

Evans looking to break Pierre's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Pierre remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Evans will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Evans looks to land a combination but Pierre avoids it well.

and Pierre counters with a nice double leg into side control. Evans won't be happy with that.

Evans has hold of Pierre's hands but Pierre slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Evans is looking for a sweep. Pierre is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Pierre seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Evans works his way to full guard. Good work.
Pierre postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Evans is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Pierre stays in close to Evans's body and controls the position.
Pierre looking to pass the guard.
Evans wants to stand up but Pierre is controlling him.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Pierre trying to control but Evans is working from the bottom.
Evans preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Pierre fails to land with a series of punches.

Evans looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Pierre!

Evans is landing with some decent strikes but Pierre is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Pierre is bucking up trying to escape but Evans cracks him with another couple of good strikes.

Evans with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

Evans prevents Pierre from getting the reversal.

Evans has control of Pierre's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Pierre regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Pierre tries to get back to half guard but can't.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Pierre regains half guard.
Evans prevents Pierre from improving his position.
Pierre is trying to maintain the position but Evans is very close to passing his half guard.
Evans wants to lay and pray for a moment but Pierre keeps working.
Evans throwing shots but Pierre is blocking nicely.
Evans not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Pierre is in trouble now - Evans has advanced to mount!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but John Evans will probably get the nod - 10:9.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Pierre steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Evans.
Pierre motions for Evans to come forward. Pierre throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.

Evans gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Evans looking to control.
Evans wants to stand up but Pierre is controlling him.
Evans looking for a sweep. Not yet Evans, not yet.
Pierre throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Evans utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Evans wants to stand up but Pierre is controlling him.

Evans had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Pierre is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Evans Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Pierre's back instead.
Pierre tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!

Evans gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks!
Evans tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Pierre counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Pierre avoids the head kick by Evans.
Pierre misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Evans clinches but Pierre breaks the clinch
and Pierre counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Evans throws a series of punches but Pierre avoids them all with ease.
Evans tries to close the distance and clinch but Pierre swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Nice takedown defense from Pierre. No joy for Evans on that attempt.
Evans blocks a head kick by Pierre.
Evans shoots for a takedown but Pierre saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Pierre throws an elbow that misses.
Pierre wants to break the clinch but can't.
Evans with the Thai clinch, lands a knee to the head.

Evans gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Evans fails to land the takedown.
Saint Pierre has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of John Evans.

Pierre has taken the fight to the clinch.

Pierre escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Evans slips a jab and a cross from Pierre.
Evans darts in trying to clinch
and Pierre counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
Evans wants to clinch up but Pierre keeps it at a distance.
The fight stays on the outside here - Evans looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Pierre swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Evans closes the distance but Pierre moves to the side
and Pierre counters with a left and a right that stings Evans.
Saint Pierre has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Evans shoots in for a takedown but Pierre shows good takedown defense.
Pierre swats away the attempt to clinch by Evans.
Evans fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Pierre decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Pierre takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Evans wants to control but Pierre is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Pierre scoring with strikes to the body and head.
Pierre working over Evans with some ground and pound. Evans looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Evans keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

And that's the end of the fight!
Saint Pierre showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Evans has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
