The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn moves to clinch but Melton breaks away
and Melton counters with a three punch combo that has Penn backing up. Penn nods at Melton to acknowledge the strikes.
Penn scores with a body shot.
Penn moves in looking to clinch but Melton pushes him off.
Penn tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Melton swivels and escapes.
Melton defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Penn.
Melton keeps the fight on the outside.
No luck for Penn with that takedown attempt.
Vaughn Melton has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Bj Penn.

and Melton counters with a solid body kick.

Penn throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Penn takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Melton scores with a couple of short elbows.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Penn tries to buck Melton off but Melton is having none of it.
Melton tries to score with some ground and pound. Penn controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.

Melton thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Melton works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Penn can't do much from the bottom here.
Penn tries to improve position but can't.

Penn manages to get back to half guard.
Melton drops an elbow to the side of Penn's head.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Penn wants to control but Melton is keeping busy.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Penn is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Melton's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Melton's back!

Melton might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Penn has the hooks in. Melton is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Vaughn Melton will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Melton stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Melton wants it to stay on the feet.
Penn tries a head kick but it misses.

Melton is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Penn.

and Melton counters with a big head kick but Penn shrugs it off.

Penn fails in his attempt to clinch.
Penn misses with a low kick as Melton jumps back.
Melton changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Penn looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Melton lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Penn down.

Melton is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Penn is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Melton stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Penn feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Melton throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Melton has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Penn is sitting in close to Melton's body. Melton has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Penn is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Penn is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Melton.
