PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Robin Van Der Sten (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tojii Gambin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Robin Van Der Sten!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Tojii Gambin!
The judges for this bout are Nard Betker, Paulsen Ambrosius and Patrick Alders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gambin leaves Van Der Sten with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Van Der Sten closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Gambin trying to control but Van Der Sten postures up.
Gambin is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Van Der Sten is staying active.
Gambin is trying to get back to full guard.
Gambin is trying to maintain the position but Van Der Sten is very close to passing his half guard.

Tojii Gambin has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Gambin looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Van Der Sten is fending him off so far but Gambin persists. Nope, Van Der Sten circles away and we're back to standing.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gambin throws a head kick but Van Der Sten moves out of range.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Gambin enables Van Der Sten to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Gambin manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Van Der Sten looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Van Der Sten has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Gambin manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Gambin is looking to stand but Gambin has his arms wrapped tightly around him, looking to prevent the damage.
Van Der Sten keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Gambin scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Van Der Sten?
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Van Der Sten is desperately trying to improve his position but Gambin has a good base and remains in mount.
Van Der Sten is squirming around, avoiding Gambin's attempts to control the action.
Van Der Sten tries to get back to half guard but can't.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Gambin breaks from Van Der Sten's wrist control and lands an elbow.

Gambin is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Van Der Sten is surviving well by controlling Gambin's body position as best he can.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gambin can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Van Der Sten is looking to escape.

Van Der Sten wants to control but Gambin is having none of it.
Gambin scoring with strikes but Van Der Sten is staying in there.
Gambin lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Gambin is stalling here but it's allowed Van Der Sten to get half guard.
Gambin is just content to waste time from the top position. Van Der Sten takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Van Der Sten will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Gambin trying to control but Van Der Sten is working from the bottom.
Van Der Sten is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Van Der Sten is working hard here to advance position.
Gambin wants to get up but he can't break Van Der Sten's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tojii Gambin dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Horrible takedown by Van Der Sten or perhaps it was just good defense by Gambin which made him look bad.
Van Der Sten shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Gambin but Gambin pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Van Der Sten cracks the inside of Gambin's front leg.
The fight stays on the outside here - Gambin looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
No luck for Gambin with that takedown attempt.

Van Der Sten has closed the distance and engaged Gambin in a clinch.
Gambin tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Van Der Sten smiles and moves away.

Van Der Sten fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Gambin to the ground. Van Der Sten is now in Gambin's guard.

Gambin looking to control.
Van Der Sten knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Gambin on the ground.

Gambin looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Gambin controls Van Der Sten momentarily but Van Der Sten frees himself.
Van Der Sten postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Van Der Sten is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Gambin is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Van Der Sten is aware though and is defending well.
Van Der Sten tries to free his leg and advance position but Gambin is retaining full guard.

Van Der Sten stays in close to Gambin's body and controls the position.

Van Der Sten got a little sloppy there for a moment and Gambin has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Van Der Sten has managed to get both his arms back between Gambin's legs - danger averted.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Gambin had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Van Der Sten defends it easily.
Van Der Sten wants to stand but Gambin has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Gambin wants to stand up but Van Der Sten is controlling him.
Tojii Gambin has got the better of the ground game so far.
Van Der Sten stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gambin swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Van Der Sten slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Van Der Sten prevents Gambin from getting back to his feet.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Van Der Sten trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Van Der Sten is looking to stand up but Gambin won't let him.
Van Der Sten is working Gambin over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Van Der Sten pushes Gambin up against the cage in a clinch.
Gambin is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Robin Van Der Sten has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Tojii Gambin.
Gambin tries to throw a body punch but Van Der Sten avoids it by throwing Gambin back against the cage.
Gambin is trying to maintain a safe position but Van Der Sten gets an underhook and turns Gambin into the cage.
Gambin jumps guard but Van Der Sten turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

Van Der Sten jumps into guard, dragging Gambin to the mat.
Gambin trying to control the position from guard on top but Van Der Sten is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Van Der Sten is looking to sweep but instead, Gambin has passed into half guard.
Gambin is keen to just control but Van Der Sten is a slippery customer.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Robin Van Der Sten will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! And we move into the final round!


Van Der Sten avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
No luck for Van Der Sten with that takedown attempt.
Gambin shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Van Der Sten defends it nicely.
Van Der Sten displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Gambin.
Van Der Sten darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Gambin fails to land with a series of punches.
Van Der Sten is trying hard to land a takedown here. Gambin sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Gambin tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Van Der Sten manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Van Der Sten closes the distance and clinches up with Gambin, looking for a takedown. Van Der Sten pushes Gambin against the cage but Gambin circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Robin Van Der Sten. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Van Der Sten manages to pull guard.
Van Der Sten controlling the position.
Van Der Sten keeping moving, preventing Gambin from controlling successfully.
Gambin should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Gambin is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Gambin wants to pass the guard but Van Der Sten is keeping the position.
Van Der Sten pulls Gambin in close to his closed guard and prevents Gambin from doing any damage or advancing position.
Gambin wants to control from the top but Van Der Sten keeps moving.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Gambin looks for a takedown but Van Der Sten sprawls well.
Gambin is looking to clinch.
Gambin shoots for a double leg takedown but Van Der Sten sprawls well. He's pushed Gambin's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Van Der Sten shoots in and bounces Gambin off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Gambin wants to stand up but Van Der Sten is controlling him.

Gambin wants to sweep but no luck.
Van Der Sten controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Gambin looking to control.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Tojii Gambin wasn't active enough on the ground.

Van Der Sten drives through with a takedown into Gambin's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Gambin is trying to control the position from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Tojii Gambin has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Van Der Sten misses with a takedown attempt - Gambin sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Gambin shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Gambin is trying to control. Van Der Sten wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Gambin is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Tojii Gambin.
I think Gambin has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
