PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Miquel Costas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ben Marshall (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Miquel Costas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ben Marshall!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Yves DeLean and Dillan Fox.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Marshall instigates a clinch.
Marshall tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Costas smiles and moves away.

Marshall clinches up against the cage.
Marshall tries to circle away but Costas has him pinned against the cage.
Costas taking a breather.
Costas tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.

Marshall turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Marshall cracks Costas with a big right hand but Costas just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Costas is trying to control Marshall's posture but Marshall avoids it.

Costas might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Marshall in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Costas struggling a bit here.
Marshall staying calm.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Costas can't do much from the bottom here.

Marshall blocks the strikes from Costas.
You can see the frustration on Costas's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Costas gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Costas keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Marshall is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Costas keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.
Marshall not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Marshall is trying to control the action in half guard but Costas is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Costas trying to control but Marshall postures up.
Marshall is keen to just control but Costas is a slippery customer.
Costas has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Marshall is working away from the top position though.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Marshall takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Costas fails with an attempt to clinch.
Costas throws a head kick that half lands.
Costas connects with a body shot.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Costas lands a two punch combo.
Costas will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Costas jabs at Marshall's body.
Marshall dives in for a single leg takedown but Costas sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Marshall goes for a takedown attempt but Costas pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Miquel Costas has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ben Marshall.
Costas tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Marshall paws at him with a jab and circles away.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Costas throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
No joy there for Marshall, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Costas is looking to clinch but Marshall is avoiding it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Miquel Costas will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Costas swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Costas goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
Costas smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.

Marshall moves into the clinch.
Costas tries a body shot but Marshall blocks it.
Costas scores with a shoulder strike.
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.
Marshall has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Costas is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Costas is trying to break free.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Costas looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Marshall jumps guard but Costas stands there with Marshall around his waist. Marshall gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Marshall is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Costas to keep the fight standing.
Miquel Costas has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ben Marshall.
Costas is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
Marshall tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Costas just stands there and leans against the cage.

Marshall tightens his grip and picks Costas up, before dumping him to the ground. Costas manages to land in guard.
Costas is trying to keep Marshall in close.
Marshall trying to control but Costas is working from the bottom.

Marshall content to sit in guard, stalling... Great. Oh but he could get punished here because Costas has locked up a guillotine! Costas's face is contorted as he sqeezes tight on the submission attempt - will he finish? Marshall is holding on here and Costas must be using up a lot of energy. Marshall has gone limp! He's out! He's out cold! Costas gets to his feet, tossing aside his stricken foe. Arms raised, he milks the applause from the crowd. Great submission!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:58 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Miquel Costas!
