PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Ludvik Rooijakker (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Fernando Cotia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ludvik Rooijakker!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Fernando Cotia!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Elvis Blanc and Ian Loll.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rooijakker shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Cotia defends it nicely.

Rooijakker shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Rooijakker showed some decent athleticism there.
Rooijakker is thwarting Cotia's attempts to control the position.
Cotia controlling the position for now.

Fernando Cotia has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Rooijakker looks for a takedown but Cotia sprawls well.
Cotia is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Rooijakker gets tackled into the cage by Cotia. Cotia maintains the clinch.
Cotia tries to pull guard but Rooijakker forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

Cotia moves into the clinch successfully.

Rooijakker wants to get back to his feet but Cotia is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Rooijakker might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Cotia decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Rooijakker will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Cotia drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Cotia tries for a takedown but Rooijakker sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Cotia shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Rooijakker as he jumps to the side.

Rooijakker has Cotia up against the cage in a clinch.

Rooijakker breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Cotia's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Rooijakker shoots in looking for a takedown but Cotia manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Rooijakker's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Rooijakker shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Cotia pinned against the cage. Cotia gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Rooijakker tries to keep at a distance but Cotia has taken the fight into the clinch.
Rooijakker drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Cotia pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Cotia leaves Rooijakker with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Fernando Cotia will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Cotia closes the distance and pushes Rooijakker back into the cage.
Rooijakker looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.

Rooijakker is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Rooijakker has Cotia pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Cotia manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Rooijakker gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Cotia.

and Cotia counters with a head kick. That will keep Rooijakker thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Cotia wants to improve his position but Rooijakker is controlling well.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Cotia regains full guard. Nicely done.

Rooijakker wants to get up but he can't break Cotia's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Rooijakker drops back, looking for a kneebar! Cotia looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Cotia looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Cotia!

Rooijakker has picked Cotia up - he's going for a ride! Rooijakker dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.

It looks like Rooijakker is going to stand back up.

Rooijakker dives in and grabs Cotia's left leg, looking for a takedown. Cotia pushes down on Rooijakker's head and hops out.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Fernando Cotia wasn't active enough on the ground.

A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Cotia prevents the takedown attempt.
Rooijakker has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Cotia avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Rooijakker escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Cotia swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Rooijakker misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Cotia clobbers Rooijakker with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
A looping hook to the body misses from Cotia. Rooijakker does a little dance to reset his feet.
Cotia shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Rooijakker as he jumps to the side.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Ludvik Rooijakker.
Well Rooijakker has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
