PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Choel Six (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Steven Helllman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Steven Helllman told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 21 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Choel Six!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Steven Helllman!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Chris Saunders and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A kick lands to the mid section there for Six.
Helllman looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Six tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Helllman defends well and Six ends up having to push Helllman into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Six goes for a takedown attempt but Helllman pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Six shoots in but no luck this time.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Choel Six. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Six shoots for a double leg takedown but Helllman sprawls well. He's pushed Six's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Six closes the distance and clinches up with Helllman, looking for a takedown. Six pushes Helllman against the cage but Helllman circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Choel Six seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Six shoots in looking for a takedown but Helllman manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Six's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Six dives in and grabs Helllman's left leg, looking for a takedown. Helllman pushes down on Six's head and hops out.
Six could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

and Helllman counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

Helllman blocks a low kick nicely.
Six is looking to clinch.
Six wants to clinch up but Helllman keeps it at a distance.
A shot to the liver by Six. Beautiful body shot.
Six lands a nice hook to Helllman's body. Helllman takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Six swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Six scores with a crisp jab that stopped Helllman in his tracks.
Six tries for a takedown but Helllman sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Six closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Helllman's guard.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

Helllman felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Six is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Helllman is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Six wants to lay and pray for a moment but Helllman keeps working.

Horrible takedown by Six or perhaps it was just good defense by Helllman which made him look bad.

and Helllman counters with a three punch combo that has Six backing up. Six nods at Helllman to acknowledge the strikes.

and Helllman counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Six shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Helllman sprawls well. Helllman wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Six gets slowly back to his feet.
Helllman moves forwards but Six connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Six is looking to score with low kicks.
Six shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Helllman defends it nicely.

Helllman stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Helllman wants it to stay on the feet.

and Helllman counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

Helllman gets cracked there but stands up to it.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Six is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Helllman is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

We're going to have a standup here because Choel Six wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Nice uppercut lands for Six. That snapped Helllman's head back.
Helllman leaves Six with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Six shoots in looking for a takedown. Helllman tries to sprawl out of it but Six keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Helllman manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Choel Six.
Well Six has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
