PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Patrick Caldwell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Quentin Gerard (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gerard has a pretty significant injury - he really shouldn't be fighting right now but he's a warrior and he's here none the less! Quentin Gerard acknowledges the crowd's support as he enters the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Patrick Caldwell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Quentin Gerard!
The judges for this bout are Wagner Zegers, Nard Betker and Radbod Blank.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gerard takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
Gerard looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!

Caldwell tries to sprawl but Gerard drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Caldwell is holding on to half guard well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gerard prevents Caldwell from standing back up.
Caldwell has his hands clasped together around Gerard's back. He's all about the action.
Caldwell pushes Gerard off looking to stand but Gerard dives back in and keeps control.

Caldwell makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Caldwell tries to score a power double leg takedown but Gerard sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Caldwell somewhat.

Caldwell feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Caldwell postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Caldwell might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Caldwell has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Gerard can do anything to dispel that myth.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Caldwell is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Gerard gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Caldwell is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Gerard can't fight it off and eventually Caldwell manages to take the fight to the floor. Gerard looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Caldwell could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Caldwell is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Patrick Caldwell just wasn't active enough.
Gerard tries for a takedown but Caldwell sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Caldwell throws a hook to the side of Gerard's head but Gerard sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Gerard checks a leg kick.

Caldwell drives through with a takedown into Gerard's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Caldwell slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Gerard working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Caldwell doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Caldwell manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Caldwell drives through with a takedown into Gerard's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Patrick Caldwell.

Caldwell throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Gerard.

Caldwell shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Gerard sprawls well. Gerard wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Caldwell gets slowly back to his feet.

Gerard gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Caldwell counters by clinching up.
Caldwell drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Gerard can't break the clinch.
Caldwell tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Gerard smiles and moves away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Patrick Caldwell. That's going to take a lot out of him.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Caldwell attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Caldwell tries to close the distance and clinch but Gerard swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Caldwell misses with a body kick.
Caldwell connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Gerard wants to clinch but Caldwell slips to the side

and Caldwell holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Caldwell pulls guard successfully.
Caldwell is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Gerard can do to turn this around?

Caldwell looking for a guillotine here but Gerard defends easily.
Caldwell has a closed guard, preventing Gerard from standing up.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Caldwell has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Gerard off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Gerard wants to clinch up but Caldwell keeps it at a distance.
Caldwell shoots for a double leg takedown but Gerard sprawls well. He's pushed Caldwell's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Gerard moves out of range of the body kick.

Gerard has his foot on Caldwell's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Caldwell works his way back into a safe position though.

Patrick Caldwell is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Gerard working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
Caldwell not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Well Caldwell has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
