PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Al Campbell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Lee Pettimore (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Al Campbell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, John Lee Pettimore!
The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Colin Fray and Ryoma Takatsuka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Campbell instigates a clinch.
Campbell pushes off an throws an elbow but Pettimore leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage.
Pettimore should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

Campbell manages to break the clinch.
Pettimore tries to clinch but Campbell moves out of range.

Pettimore fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Campbell to the ground. Pettimore is now in Campbell's guard.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Campbell is trying to keep Pettimore in close.
Campbell looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Campbell controls Pettimore momentarily but Pettimore frees himself.
Pettimore tries to free his leg and advance position but Campbell is retaining full guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Al Campbell wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Campbell moves out of range of the body kick from Pettimore.

Campbell goes for a double leg but Pettimore avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Pettimore continues to drive forward.

Campbell's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Campbell is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Pettimore knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Campbell looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Pettimore is looking for a sweep.

Campbell decides to stand back up. Campbell steps back and let's Pettimore get back to his feet.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Pettimore shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Campbell trying to hold on to Pettimore's head to control him but Pettimore postures up.

Pettimore keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Campbell dodges the punch combination from Pettimore.
Pettimore tries to close the distance and clinch up but Campbell swats him away and circles back towards the center.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Pettimore.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Pettimore throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Campbell has one of Pettimore's arms on lockdown, trying to prevent him from doing any damage.
Campbell wants to get back to his feet.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Pettimore tries for a kimura but Campbell is defending well.
Pettimore really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Campbell. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Campbell prevents Pettimore from improving position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but John Lee Pettimore will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Pettimore fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Campbell to the ground. Pettimore is now in Campbell's guard.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Pettimore might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Campbell haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Pettimore looks to land a combination but Campbell avoids it well.

Campbell is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Pettimore defends it well.

Campbell really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

The strikes coming from Campbell are missing the target in this wave of attacks.

Campbell is trying to get an arm triangle but Pettimore is defending well.

Campbell thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Pettimore is trying to control Campbell's posture but Campbell avoids it.

Campbell has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Al Campbell overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Pettimore's corner is telling him to maintain position.

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Pettimore throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Pettimore shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Campbell's guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

John Lee Pettimore showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!



Pettimore is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Campbell's half guard.
Campbell flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Campbell manages to get to full guard.
Campbell throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Pettimore wants to control from the top but Campbell keeps moving.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Pettimore wants to get up but he can't break Campbell's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Pettimore tries to clinch but Campbell is having none of it.

so Campbell counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Campbell is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Pettimore escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Campbell gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Campbell will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Pettimore is pulling down on Campbell's head. It's preventing any offense from Campbell, at least for the moment.

Campbell is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Pettimore has managed to free his arm - good work.
Campbell prevents Pettimore from improving his position.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Pettimore is defending against the submission attempts here by Campbell.
Al Campbell has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
John Lee Pettimore is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Campbell thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Pettimore's head.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Al Campbell.
I think Pettimore has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
