Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Oscar Avila (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Johny Rico (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rico is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Bolt Thrower - The IVth Crusade . Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Oscar Avila!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 1, fighting out of The Island, Johny Rico!
The judges for this bout are Bart Greer, David Hoff and Santiago Holmes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rico shoots in and drives through. Avila sprawls well.
Avila throws a left and a right that both miss

and Rico counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Rico wants to free his trapped foot but Avila is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Rico is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Avila still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Avila has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!
Rico is trying to control Avila's posture but Avila avoids it.
Rico tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Avila wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Avila wants to stand but Rico has his arm trapped.
Rico is looking for a sweep.
Rico tries to control but end up mounted... ooooh, that's bad.
Rico wants to hold on but Avila pushes him away.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Rico is working to get back to half guard.
Rico tries to hold on but Avila postures up.
Avila wants to get back to his feet but Rico is holding on tight.
Avila will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Rico really trying hard to get back to half guard here.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Avila stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.
Rico slips a jab and a cross from Avila.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
The fighters circling - Rico throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Rico jabs Avila to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Avila scores with a jab. Rico acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
Avila takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Rico jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.
Rico misses with a body shot.
A combination from Avila does no damage.
Avila tries to bum rush Rico with a series of wild strikes but Rico uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Avila looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Avila enables Rico to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Avila manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Avila is breathing heavily.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Rico throws a big right hand that misses.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Rico showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Rico's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Rico looking to sit in guard and control but Avila gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rico looking for a sweep. Not yet Rico, not yet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Johny Rico dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Avila takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.

Rico throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Avila tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Rico is in Avila's guard.
Rico with a flurry of punches that miss.
Rico looking to pass the guard.
Johny Rico has got the better of the ground game so far.
Rico sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Avila's guard.
Rico is trying to control the action in half guard but Avila is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Rico slows the pace down in half guard.
Rico is keen to just control but Avila is a slippery customer.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Rico in particular looking to stall.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Johny Rico wasn't active enough on the ground.
Avila on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Oscar Avila is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Rico drives through with a takedown into guard.
Avila can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Rico controls the pace.
Rico wants to control from the top but Avila keeps moving.
Rico passes Avila's left leg - he's now in half guard.

Rico perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Avila keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Rico not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Rico is controlling the pace.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Rico is looking to take a break and control but Avila is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Still in half guard, Rico seems content to control.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Johny Rico.
Rico lands a nice looking body shot.

Rico looking to score a takedown here. Avila is defending well but Rico drives through and ends up in Avila's guard.
Rico postures up in Avila's guard and throws a big left but Avila blocks it.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Rico trying to control the position from guard on top but Avila is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Rico throws a strike but Avila rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Rico is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Rico is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rico trying to mount his opponent but Avila defends it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Johny Rico showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Rico avoids a punch combination nicely.

Rico is looking to work some ground and pound but Avila has wrist control.

We've been hearing good reports from Avila's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Avila can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Rico controls the pace.
Avila utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

A looping hook to the body misses from Rico. Avila does a little dance to reset his feet.

Rico changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Avila looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Rico grinds an elbow into Avila's temple.
Avila stops Rico from passing to mount.
Rico creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Avila sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Rico swings around for an armbar but Avila sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Rico's guard.
Rico is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

Rico looking for a sweep. Not yet Rico, not yet.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Johny Rico has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Avila keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Avila gets caught flat footed, as Rico shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Avila preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Rico forces his way into half guard.
Rico throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Rico performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Avila is staying active underneath Rico, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Rico is figuring out what he wants to do next.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Johny Rico was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Rico has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Avila wants to stand but Rico is controlling the position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Johny Rico comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Rico has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
