PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Ian Wiggins (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Merv Ridley (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ridley is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Don't Turn Off The Lights - Enrique Iglesias . The key to victory for Ian Wiggins has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Merv Ridley!
The judges for this bout are Donald Grub, Chris Edwards and James Atkins.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Wiggins fails with an attempt to clinch.
Wiggins shoots for a double leg takedown but Ridley sprawls well. He's pushed Wiggins's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Wiggins closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Wiggins lands in his opponent's guard.
Wiggins trying to control but Ridley is working from the bottom.
Wiggins forces his way into half guard.

Ridley looking for submissions off his back.
Wiggins prevents Ridley from improving his position.
Ridley makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Ridley.

Ridley is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Ridley looking for a guillotine here but Wiggins defends easily.

Ridley working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Wiggins doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Wiggins manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Ridley looks gassed!
Ridley looking for a sweep. Not yet Ridley, not yet.

Ridley throws his legs up looking for a submission but Wiggins uses it to pass to side control.
Wiggins advances nicely into full mount.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Wiggins cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Wiggins is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Ridley can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Ridley regains half guard.
Ridley is staying active underneath Wiggins, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Ridley actively working from the bottom here.
Ridley tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Wiggins has advanced to mount. Uh oh.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

Ridley is squirming around, avoiding Wiggins's attempts to control the action.
Ridley can't escape the position.
Wiggins tries to stand up but he's trapped just for the moment.
Wiggins working the ground and pound effectively.
Ridley sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Wiggins prevents Ridley from improving his position.
Ridley is looking to get back to full guard here but Wiggins has managed to pass to side control instead.
Ridley is desperately trying to improve his position but Wiggins has a good base and remains in mount.

Ridley looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back!

Wiggins is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Ian Wiggins will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Some bone on bone action there as Ridley checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Wiggins lands with a kick to the temple. Ridley shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
No luck for Wiggins with that takedown attempt.
Ian Wiggins seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Wiggins shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Ridley as he avoids it easily.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Wiggins looks for a takedown but Ridley sprawls well.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ian Wiggins. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Wiggins doesn't manage to clinch there - Ridley circles away.
Ridley throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Wiggins's waist but Wiggins gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Ridley off to one side.
Ian Wiggins is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Ridley shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Ridley showed some decent athleticism there.

Ridley is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Ridley is trying for a kimura here. Wiggins looks like he's in a lot of pain... and he's tapping out! Ridley wins by kimura!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:05 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Merv Ridley!
