PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Zdravko Dren (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gustavo Santos (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Zdravko Dren!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Gustavo Santos!
The judges for this bout are Dirk Anderson, David Hoff and Sandra Marshall.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Dren is defended easily by Santos.
Dren seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym.
Santos looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Dren lands with a thumping leg kick.
Santos shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Santos blocks the body kick.

Santos drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Dren sneaks back into half guard.
Dren tries to get to full guard but Santos has control of the leg.
Dren gets full guard.
Dren wants to sweep but no luck.
Dren knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Santos on the ground.

Dren keeping moving, preventing Santos from controlling successfully.

Santos decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Dren scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Dren throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
A good leg kick by Dren.
Dren thuds a left hand into Santos's body.
An inside leg kick lands from Dren.
Dren throws a head kick that Santos semi-blocks.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Dren fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Santos has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Dren misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Dren shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Santos defends it nicely.
Santos on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Dren stuffs the takedown.
Santos walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Dren could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Dren tries a head kick but it misses.

Dren fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Santos, pushing him back against the cage.
Dren with an attempt at a knee that misses.

The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Dren takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.
Dren using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Santos has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Santos is defending well against a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Zdravko Dren. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Dren lands a glancing elbow in the clinch.
Dren wants to break the clinch but can't.
Dren stops a takedown attempt from Santos.

Santos decides to pull guard.

Dren stands up and waves to Santos to follow him.
Santos swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Dren counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Santos on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Dren. Dren obviously looking to wear him down.
Santos stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Dren.
Dren fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Santos on the side of the head.

Dren has Santos up against the cage in a clinch.
Santos's leg has a nasty welt from taking a succession of leg kicks. That must be slowing him down.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
The referee is keeping an eye on Dren - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Dren lands a knee to the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Dren drives through and clinches with Santos against the cage.
Santos stalling in the clinch but Dren improves position.
Santos is trying to pull guard but Dren has him pressed against the cage.
Dren effectively controlling the action here.
Santos is pressed up against the cage. Dren has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Santos down to the mat. Santos avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Dren will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Dren unloads a knee to the mid-section. Santos lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Santos throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Santos working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
Santos is fighting to break Dren's control of his arms but Dren is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Dren wants to sweep but no luck.

Zdravko Dren has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Dren takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Santos.
Dren misses with a head kick.
Dren keeps the fight on the outside.
Dren connects with a leg kick. Santos looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.
No luck for Santos with that takedown attempt.

Dren has closed the distance and engaged Santos in a clinch.
Dren creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Santos's defenses.

Santos decides to stand up, so the ref orders Dren to his feet.
Santos shoots in for a takedown but Dren shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Dren closes this distance looking for a takedown but Santos circles away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dren tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Gustavo Santos is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Dren clinches up against the cage.
Dren lands an elbow inside that Santos shrugs off.

Dren breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Both fighters circling a little - Dren finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.
Dren stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Dren wants it to stay on the feet.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Dren.
Dren getting the better of the striking in that exchange.

Santos gets tackled into the cage by Dren. Dren maintains the clinch.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Dren slowing the pace effectively.

Dren lands a shot to the body.

Dren breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Dren lands a jab to Santos's midsection.
Santos walks forward, straight into a front kick from Dren.
Dren darts in looking for a takedown but Santos gets double underhooks and turns Dren into the cage.
Santos tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Dren smiles and moves away.
Santos stuffs the takedown attempt from Dren. Dren gets slowly back to his feet.

Dren lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Santos circles away quickly and effectively.

That kick from Dren tenderised Santos's leg. Santos is trying to keep his angry face on.
Santos shoots in but Dren avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Dren buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Santos shoots in looking for a takedown but Dren manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Santos's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Dren scores with a hook to the body. Santos takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Dren shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Dren misses with a head kick.
Dren attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.

Dren lands a nice looking kick to the body. Santos takes a step back to recover.
Santos throws the kick towards the body but Dren avoids it.
Dren scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
Santos shoots in looking for a takedown. Dren tries to sprawl out of it but Santos keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Dren manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Dren lands a leg kick that knocks Santos off balance momentarily.
Crunch! Dren slams his shin into Santos's torso.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Santos tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Dren defends well and Santos ends up having to push Dren into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Santos tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Dren just stands there and leans against the cage.
Dren gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.
Zdravko Dren is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Dren tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Santos is trying to force a seperation but Dren has the dominant position.

Dren pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Dren shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Santos as he avoids it easily.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Dren looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Santos is fending him off so far but Dren persists. Nope, Santos circles away and we're back to standing.
Dren swats away the attempt to clinch by Santos.
Gustavo Santos has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Dren gets in close and instigates a clinch.

And that's the end of the fight!
Zdravko Dren showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Dren has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
