PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Robert Hutton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Eric Eel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Robert Hutton!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Eric Eel!
The judges for this bout are Donatello Bradman, Bruno Hogan and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hutton throws a sloppy head kick and Eel moves out of range easily.
A head kick by Hutton misses
and Eel counters with a good low kick that Hutton was not able to check.
Hutton tries to clinch up.
Eel dips down and scores with a jab to the body.

Eel closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Eel has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Eel prevents the takedown attempt.
A nice left hand lands by Hutton.
Hutton tries to break free but Eel pushes him back against the cage.
Hutton is trying to push Eel away but Eel has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Eel breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Hutton fails in his attempt to clinch.
Eel throws a head kick but Hutton moves out of range.
Hutton scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.

Eel breaks from the clinch.
Hutton fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Eel.
Robert Hutton seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Hutton thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Eel if he has to take too many more of those.

Eel closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Eel lands a shot to the body.
Eel taking a break, stalling in the clinch.

Eel's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Hutton scores with a body shot.
Hutton misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Hutton throws a head kick that misses.

Eel shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Eel showed some decent athleticism there.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Hutton manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Eel keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.
Eel tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Hutton gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Eel.

Eel pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Robert Hutton is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Eel tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
We've been hearing reports that Hutton has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Hutton can't break the clinch.

Hutton misses with a straight left.
Eel blocks a head kick by Hutton.
Eel circles away from the clinch attempt.

Hutton throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Eel shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Hutton is trying to defend but Eel finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Hutton tries to kick Eel off but Eel keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Eel wants to get back to his feet.
Hutton is trying to stand back up but Eel is controlling him

Eel controlling the pace.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Eel's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Eric Eel was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Eel gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Eel blocks the elbow strike.
A knee to the head by Eel.

Eel successfully pulls guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Hutton throwing strikes but missing.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Hutton landing some decent shots from guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Robert Hutton will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Eel checks a leg kick.
Hutton tries to close the distance and clinch but Eel swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Hutton looks for the body kick but Eel saw that one coming.
Hutton pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Eel drives through and clinches with Hutton against the cage.
Eel tries to land a knee to the head but Hutton blocks with his arms.
Hutton working hard to break the clinch.
Hutton can't break the clinch.
A shot in the inside from Eel.

Eel breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Eel looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Hutton throws a head kick that misses.

Eel moves into range and clinches up with Hutton.
Hutton is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Eel is keeping busy.
Hutton is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Hutton wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
A short body shot lands from Eel as the two fighters clinch.

Eel breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Hutton throws a push kick but Eel slaps the foot to one side.

Eel is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Hutton's half guard.

Eel wants to free his trapped foot but Hutton is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Hutton pushes Eel off looking to stand but Eel dives back in and keeps control.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Eel stops Hutton from getting back to his feet.
Eric Eel has got the better of the ground game so far.
Eel working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Eel seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Hutton does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Eric Eel has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Hutton tries to clinch there but Eel circles away.

Hutton misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

and Eel counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Eel stalks Hutton and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Hutton's face. Hutton staggers backwards, shaken.
Eel fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Hutton avoids it really well and circles away.
Eric Eel is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Horrible takedown by Eel or perhaps it was just good defense by Hutton which made him look bad.
Robert Hutton has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Eric Eel.
Hutton lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Hutton throws a wild body kick that Eel sees coming a mile off.

Eel breaks from the clinch.

Eel dives in and scores a takedown into Hutton's guard.
Eel really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Hutton. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Eel wants to get up but he can't break Hutton's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Hutton pushes Eel off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

Eric Eel showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Hutton's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. And we move into the final round!


Eel darts in looking for a takedown but Hutton gets double underhooks and turns Eel into the cage.
Hutton goes for a takedown attempt but Eel pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Hutton tries to clinch there but Eel circles away.
Hutton tries to close the distance and clinch up but Eel swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Hutton lands a head kick. Eel smiles back at him and beckons him forward.
Eel has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Hutton.
Hutton looks to land a body kick but Eel moved away.
Eel ducks under a wild hook from Hutton.
Eel keeps the fight on the outside.
Hutton misses with a head kick.
Eel has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Hutton.
Hutton dodges the punch combination from Eel.

Hutton throws a sloppy head kick
and Eel makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Hutton pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Hutton moves to clinch but Eel breaks away
and Eel counters with a flying knee. Nice.
Eel avoids the head kick by Hutton.
Hutton scores with a head kick. Eel tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

and Eel holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Eel breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Eel has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Hutton uses from the top position.

Eel looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Eel wants to stand but Hutton has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Eel is trying to control the action in half guard but Hutton is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Hutton is trying to stand up here but Eel is controlling him well.

Eel keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Eric Eel hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Hutton stuffs the takedown attempt from Eel. Eel gets slowly back to his feet.

Hutton gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Hutton is looking to stand up but Eel isn't so interested in that idea.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Eel loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Eel wants to stand but Hutton is controlling his posture from full guard.
Eel trying to control but Hutton is working from the bottom.

And that's the end of the fight!
Eric Eel comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Eel has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
