PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mike Rolst (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and William Wellington (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Mike Rolst!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, William Wellington!
The judges for this bout are Darius Henderson, Donatello Bradman and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Wellington has managed to clinch.

Wellington breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Rolst moves into range and connects with a jab.
Wellington keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Wellington takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.

Rolst closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Wellington did well to prevent Rolst getting side control.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Wellington wants to improve his position but Rolst is controlling well.
Well, if Rolst is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Rolst is keen to just control but Wellington is a slippery customer.

Mike Rolst has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Mike Rolst.

Rolst shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Wellington tries to control but Rolst wriggling away.

Poor strikes thrown by Wellington there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

Rolst is wriggling around trying to escape.
Wellington controlling the position easily from mount.
Rolst keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

William Wellington dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Rolst gets the takedown into side control.
Wellington is looking to regain half guard here but Rolst keeps moving and retains side control.
Rolst prevents Wellington from escaping the position.
Wellington tries to bench press Rolst off him but Rolst keeps the position.
Wellington is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Wellington manages to escape and get back to his feet!
Rolst tests Wellington's chin there with a solid looking shot.

Rolst looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Wellington is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Rolst is controlling him.
Wellington keeping moving, preventing Rolst from controlling successfully.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Mike Rolst wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Rolst manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Wellington on his heels. He'll look to pass Wellington's guard now, I'm sure.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Wellington is on top in guard.
William Wellington has got the better of the ground game so far.
Wellington working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Rolst's head.
Rolst avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Wellington is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Wellington throws an elbow that misses. Rolst uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Wellington's guard. Nice move by Rolst!

Rolst postures up.

Wellington working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Rolst doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Rolst manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Wellington throws his legs up looking for a submission but Rolst uses it to pass to side control.

Wellington wants to control but Rolst postures up.
Rolst tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.
Wellington is trying to get back to half guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but William Wellington will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!



Rolst shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Wellington napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Wellington tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Rolst wants to control but Wellington is keeping him busy.
Both fighters take a look at the clock.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Rolst throws a nice looking combination but Wellington bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Rolst stalks Wellington and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Wellington's face. Wellington staggers backwards, shaken.
Rolst throws a left and a right that both miss
and Rolst takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Wellington has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight.
Mike Rolst seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Wellington has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Wellington there as he acknowledges the shot.
Rolst throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Wellington counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
No joy there for Rolst, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Rolst swinging wildly here.
Rolst avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Nice takedown defense from Rolst. No joy for Wellington on that attempt.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Wellington is defended easily by Rolst.
Rolst throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Rolst shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Wellington napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Wellington tries to control but Rolst manages to take his back.
Wellington rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
Rolst content to control rather than advance.

Wellington is looking for a sweep. Rolst is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Wellington regains full guard. Nicely done.

Wellington looking for a guillotine here but Rolst defends easily.
Wellington controls Rolst momentarily but Rolst frees himself.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Mike Rolst.

Rolst shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Rolst was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rolst wants to lay and pray for a moment but Wellington keeps working.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Mike Rolst.
I think Wellington has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
