PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Co Reid (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Phillip Tanner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Reid comes to the cage accompanied by Euro Set - Night. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Co Reid!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Phillip Tanner!
The judges for this bout are David Hoff, Bart Greer and Dirk Anderson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Tanner decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Tanner seems to be looking for submissions.
Tanner slips a nice elbow through Reid's hands, connecting with Reid's forehead.
Reid is looking for a sweep. Tanner is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Reid has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Tanner is working away from the top position though.
Reid pushes Tanner off looking to stand but Tanner dives back in and keeps control.
Reid wants to get back to full guard.
Tanner has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Tanner working over Reid with some ground and pound. Reid looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Tanner throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Tanner wants to control but Reid is keeping him busy.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Reid is looking to escape.

Tanner is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Reid reverses the position - he's now on top in Tanner's guard.
Tanner trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.

Tanner working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Reid doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Reid manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Tanner looking for subs off his back but Reid has passed one foot through into half guard.

Reid stands up from half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Reid throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.

Tanner moves into the clinch.

Reid escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Tanner lands a really nice looking cross but Reid seems unphased.
Reid tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Tanner counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Tanner will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Tanner throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

and Reid counters by clinching up.
Tanner is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Reid is defending well.
Reid looking to slow down the pace here.
Reid really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Reid gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Tanner.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Reid breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Tanner pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Tanner gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Reid to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Tanner looks winded!
Reid pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Tanner is keeping the position for now.
Reid being controlled here momentarily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Reid is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Reid tries to clinch up but Tanner circles away and keeps his distance.

Reid drives through with a takedown into guard.

Tanner is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Reid defends well.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Tanner keeping full guard, as Reid tries to pass.
Reid has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Tanner keeping moving, preventing Reid from controlling successfully.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Phillip Tanner will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Reid tries to clinch up but Tanner circles away and keeps his distance.
Tanner takes a swing at Reid's ribcage but misses.

Reid shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Tanner is trying to defend but Reid finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Tanner keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Co Reid overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Reid throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Reid sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Tanner defending well though.

Tanner is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Reid pulls his head out easily.
Tanner is staying active underneath Reid, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Tanner looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

Reid stands up and beckons Tanner to join him on the feet.
Reid tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Tanner paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Reid feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Tanner had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Reid defends it easily.
Tanner is breathing heavily.

Tanner has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Reid can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Tanner can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Reid controls the pace.

Reid postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Tanner keeping moving, preventing Reid from controlling successfully.
Reid wanted to stand there but Tanner had control of the position.

Reid stands up from Tanner's guard - Reid perhaps looking for a knockout.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Reid tries to close the distance and clinch but Tanner swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Reid shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Tanner trying to hold on to Reid's head to control him but Reid postures up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Reid tries to pass to full mount but Tanner defends it.
Tanner is trying to control but can't.
Tanner makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Tanner.
Reid wants to control from the top but Tanner keeps moving.

Tanner is looking for a triangle here but Reid uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Tanner tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Reid wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Reid stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Reid tries to clinch but Tanner is having none of it.
Tanner tries to clinch there but Reid circles away.
Tanner darts in looking for a takedown but Reid gets double underhooks and turns Tanner into the cage.

Reid turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
This has been an exciting period of action!

Reid decides to stand up, so the ref orders Tanner to his feet.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Tanner tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Tanner chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Reid can pounce on him.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Co Reid dominated that second round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.



Tanner shoots in and gets a takedown into Reid's guard.
Reid throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Tanner's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Reid tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Tanner trying to control the position from guard on top but Reid is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Reid is trying to keep Tanner in close.

Reid is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Tanner got a little sloppy there for a moment and Reid has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Tanner has managed to get both his arms back between Reid's legs - danger averted.
Tanner connects with a couple of short punches.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Tanner trying to control but Reid is working from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Tanner gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Tanner changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Reid looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Tanner landing a few strikes.
Reid takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.

Tanner stands up.
Tanner tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Reid paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Tanner throws a shot from downtown. Reid moves away and avoids it.
Tanner swings and misses with a hook to the body.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Reid drops his hands momentarily and Tanner takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Reid tries to clinch but Tanner is having none of it.

Tanner throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Reid tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Tanner is in Reid's guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Reid manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Tanner manages to get himself to full guard.

Tanner is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Tanner is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Reid has his hands clasped together but Tanner extends and breaks Reid's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Tanner.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:49 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Phillip Tanner!
In defeat, Co Reid stepped up to the mic, saying 'hahaha'.
