PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Brett Hartlock (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alastair Stirling (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hartlock comes to the cage accompanied by Back in Black. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Brett Hartlock!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Alastair Stirling!
The judges for this bout are Wagner Zegers, Patrick Alders and Paulsen Ambrosius.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hartlock shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Stirling as he jumps to the side.
Hartlock has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Stirling swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

so Hartlock counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Hartlock trying to control the position from guard on top but Stirling is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Hartlock won't allow Stirling to get back to his feet.
Stirling keeping full guard, as Hartlock tries to pass.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hartlock not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hartlock tries to free his leg and advance position but Stirling is retaining full guard.

Hammerfist, elbow! yells Hartlock's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Hartlock looking to sit in guard and control but Stirling gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Hartlock is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Stirling defends well.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Stirling misses with a double jab

so Hartlock counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Hartlock wants to control from the top but Stirling keeps moving.

Hartlock seems to be looking for submissions.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Hartlock perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Stirling pushes Hartlock off looking to stand but Hartlock dives back in and keeps control.
Hartlock wants to lay and pray for a moment but Stirling keeps working.
Hartlock tries to pass to full mount but Stirling defends it.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Stirling throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Hartlock moves out of range as Stirling strikes.
Stirling takes a swing at Hartlock's ribcage but misses.
Stirling misses with a wild combination.
Alastair Stirling is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Hartlock drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Hartlock wants to control from the top but Stirling keeps moving.
Hartlock trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Hartlock trying to control the position from guard on top but Stirling is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Brett Hartlock dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


A looping hook to the body misses from Stirling. Hartlock does a little dance to reset his feet.
Stirling throws an off balance right hand
and Hartlock cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Stirling throws a right hand that Hartlock ducks under and follows up with a left that Hartlock also avoids with ease.

and Hartlock counters with a single leg into guard. Stirling didn't expect that.

Hartlock slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Stirling seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Hartlock is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Stirling can do to turn this around?

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Hartlock stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Stirling swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Hartlock moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
Hartlock shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Stirling but Stirling pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Stirling misses with a double jab

and Hartlock counters with a shoot takedown. Stirling fights it but they end up in guard.

Hartlock preventing the sweep.
Hartlock controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Hartlock stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Stirling swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Stirling looking to hit a scissor sweep but Hartlock is one step ahead there.
Hartlock looking to sit in guard and control but Stirling gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Hartlock not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Hartlock had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Stirling defends it easily.
Stirling trying to stand up but can't free himself from Hartlock's guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Brett Hartlock overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Hartlock pulls Stirling in close to prevent any damage.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Stirling lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.


It looks like Brett Hartlock has been cut.
Stirling misses the jab.

Hartlock throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Stirling tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Hartlock is in Stirling's guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Hartlock looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Hartlock passes into half guard.

Stirling throws a right hand that misses

and Hartlock counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Stirling regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Hartlock.
Hartlock stops Stirling from standing up.
Hartlock wants to control from the top but Stirling keeps moving.
Hartlock is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Stirling is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Hartlock looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
It looks like Stirling is going to stand back up.
Hartlock keeping hold of Stirling's head, controlling as best he can.
Hartlock has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Stirling is working away from the top position though.
Brett Hartlock is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Hartlock is controlling Stirling's trapped leg to prevent Stirling from advancing to side control.

Stirling jabs Hartlock right on the nose. Hartlock blinks but takes it well.
Alastair Stirling is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Stirling looks to throw the jab but Hartlock is out of range.
Stirling lands a right hook to the body.
Hartlock shoots in looking for a takedown but Stirling manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Hartlock's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Hartlock connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Stirling momentarily.

Hartlock sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Stirling's guard.

Stirling is not content to let Hartlock control the position.

Stirling is refusing to be controlled, as Hartlock sits in half guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Stirling fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Hartlock manages to avoid it.
Stirling misses with a two punch combination.
Hartlock uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Stirling.

and Hartlock counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Hartlock.

Alastair Stirling has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Hartlock seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Stirling for as long as he can get away with.

Brett Hartlock showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Hartlock, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
