PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jeffrey Molina (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ricardo Lamas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Lamas comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Run This Town kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jeffrey Molina!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ricardo Lamas!
The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Paulo Santos and Daniel Cesar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Lamas feints and as Molina raises his hands in defense, Lamas changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Molina is pulling down on Lamas's head to control his posture.
Molina utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Lamas trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Molina has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Lamas postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Molina working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Lamas doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Lamas manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Lamas is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Lamas drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Lamas jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Lamas tries to free his leg and advance position but Molina is retaining full guard.
Molina is in a tricky position. We've heard reports from his gym mates at Brazilian Top Team that he's been drilling escapes, so let's see if he can get back to his feet.

Lamas drops back, looking for a kneebar! Molina looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Molina looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Molina!
Molina postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

Molina creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Lamas sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Molina knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Lamas on the ground.

Molina is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Lamas has escaped the position, nice work there.
Lamas struggling a bit here.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Molina cracks Lamas with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Molina cracks Lamas with a big right hand but Lamas just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Molina lands a nice short elbow.

Molina is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Molina not landing any meaningful shots this time.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Molina connects with a nice short shot to Lamas's temple.
Lamas gets back to full guard.
Molina looking to sit in guard and control but Lamas gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Lamas told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.

Molina wants to sweep here but Lamas controlling him for the moment.
Molina is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Lamas dives into side control.
Molina is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Lamas off and has taken his back!

I really don't envy Lamas right now.

Molina closes the distance and clinches.
Molina will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Lamas up against the cage.
Molina is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Lamas to keep the fight standing.

Lamas has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Molina can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Lamas closes the distance and clinches up with Molina, looking for a takedown. Lamas pushes Molina against the cage but Molina circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Molina shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Lamas manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Molina postures up in Lamas's guard and throws a big left but Lamas blocks it.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
