PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Shang Chi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Glen Starner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 8 - 0, fighting out of London, Shang Chi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 20 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Glen Starner!
The judges for this bout are Columbo Gatti, Dean Styles and Lou da Vinci.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Starner clobbers Chi with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Starner swinging wildly here.
Starner bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Chi's head backwards.
Chi throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Starner's head.
Chi looks to land a body kick but Starner moved away.
Starner swats away the attempt to clinch by Chi.
Starner with a body punch. A glancing blow.
Chi thumps Starner with a low kick.
Starner scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Chi throws a leg kick but Starner moved away.
Starner checks a leg kick nicely.
Chi scoring well with a low kick there.
Chi lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.
Chi throws a one two combo.
Chi thumps Starner with a low kick.
Starner cracks Chi with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Chi buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Chi thows a body shot but no joy.
Starner uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Chi has time to react.
Starner checks a leg kick nicely.
Starner throws a big shot that misses.
A clash of legs there as Starner blocks the low kick.
Shang Chi is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Chi takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Starner with a jab.
A jab lands there for Starner.
Jab, jab by Chi - just one landing.
Chi lands with a cross.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Starner cracks a nice hook into Chi's ribs.
Starner shoots in but Chi avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Good shot there by Starner.
Chi tries to land a leg kick but Starner saw it coming and moves away.
Chi thows a left - swing and a miss!
Chi with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Chi fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Starner tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Chi defends well and Starner ends up having to push Chi into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
A head punch on the inside from Starner fails to land.

Starner jumps guard and drags Chi to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Chi has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Starner is proving hard to escape from.
Starner is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Starner looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Chi passes into side control.
Starner manages to work his way to half guard, despite Chi's best efforts.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Starner tries to roll over but Chi keeps him under control.
Chi looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Chi escapes and gets back to his feet.
Chi lands a nice hook to Starner's body. Starner takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Chi moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Chi missing with a left hand there. Starner was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Starner scores with a hook to the body. Chi takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.

Starner is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Chi's half guard.
Starner is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.
Starner wants to control from the top but Chi keeps moving.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Starner drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Chi dives on top into guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Chi gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Chi cracks the inside of Starner's front leg.
Starner changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Chi tries to avoid it but Starner manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Chi to the ground. Chi escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Shang Chi has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Glen Starner.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Chi tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Starner lands a nice leg kick that just misses Chi's sensitive parts.
Starner feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Chis jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Chi defending well as Starner loads up on a big left hand.
Chi buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Starner feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Chis jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!
Starner scores with a crisp jab that stopped Chi in his tracks.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Shang Chi will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action!

A nice leg kick lands there from Chi.
Glen Starner is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Chi waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Starner.
Starner throws a series of punches but Chi avoids them all with ease.
Chi looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Starner misses with a double jab.
Chi swings for the body but Starner moves out of range.
Shang Chi seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Starner takes one on the button.
Chi tries a low kick but Starner avoids it.
Chi uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Starner.
Starner lands the left hand.
Starner moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Chi keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Starner's leg has a nasty welt from taking a succession of leg kicks. That must be slowing him down.
Chi connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Starner's hands.


Starner is rocked!
Chi lands a front kick.
Starner is still on wobbly legs! Can Chi finish him?
A low kick from Chi is predictable there

and Starner counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Chi looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Starner trying to control but Chi is working from the bottom.
Starner pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Chi is keeping the position for now.
Starner seems to have recovered his senses.
Starner slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
You can see the frustration on Chi's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Chi is not content to let Starner control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Starner lands some shots froms side control.
Starner throwing shots but missing, from side control.
Starner is looking to take a break and control but Chi is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Starner is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Chi is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Starner with the ground and pound but Chi regains half guard under the barage of strikes.

Starner thows a huge punch but Chi dodges it nicely.
Starner wants to take a breather but Chi is having none of it.
Starner landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Chi avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Starner.
Chi keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Chi is not content to let Starner control the position.
Chi is looking for a sweep. Starner is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Chi is working hard here to advance position.

Starner loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Starner postures up in Chi's guard and throws a big left but Chi blocks it.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Starner tries to free his leg and advance position but Chi is retaining full guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Glen Starner showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Chi moves away from the strike by Starner.
Chi ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Starner moves away.
Chi wants to clinch up but Starner keeps it at a distance.
Chi is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches.
Chi bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Starner's head backwards.
Chi takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Starner lands a right hook to the body.
Chi swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Starner checks a leg kick nicely.
Starner connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Chi momentarily.
Starner fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Chi avoids it really well and circles away.
Chi works the jab nicely.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Chi lands with a kick to the ribs.
Starner is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.

Starner uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Chi.
Starner swats away the attempt to clinch by Chi.
Chi fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Starner.

Chi gets caught flat footed, as Starner shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Starner pushing down on Chi's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.

Starner is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Chi pulls Starner in close to his closed guard and prevents Starner from doing any damage or advancing position.
Starner tries to free his leg and advance position but Chi is retaining full guard.

Chi is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Chi has control of Starner's left arm, preventing Starner from doing any damage.
Starner stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Chi swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Shang Chi has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Chi looks to land a right hand but Starner moved out of range.
Starner jabs Chi right on the nose. Chi blinks but takes it well.

Starner gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Starner manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Starner is adopting a defensive guard.
Glen Starner has got the better of the ground game so far.
Starner tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Chi would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Starner is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Chi defends well.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Starner is trying to keep Chi in close.

And that's the end of the fight!
Glen Starner comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Starner has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
