PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Asiong Salonga (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Michael Death (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Salonga comes into the arena with Hari ng Tondo blaring out of the sound system. Asiong Salonga had a look across the cage there at his opponent. He definitely means business

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Asiong Salonga!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Michael Death!
The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Cecil Peabody and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Salonga closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Salonga lands in his opponent's guard.
Salonga has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Death is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Salonga preventing the sweep.
Death keeping moving, preventing Salonga from controlling successfully.

Salonga got a little sloppy there for a moment and Death has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Salonga has managed to get both his arms back between Death's legs - danger averted.
Salonga looking to sit in guard and control but Death gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Death trying to control but Salonga is working from the bottom.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Salonga looking to hit a scissor sweep but Death is one step ahead there.
Death trying to control the position from guard on top but Salonga is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Michael Death hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Salonga shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Death as he jumps to the side.

and Death decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Salonga's guard.
Salonga really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Death trying to control the position from guard on top but Salonga is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Salonga on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Salonga tries to get out of the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Death drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Salonga dives on top into guard.
Salonga is standing up over Death. Death looks to escape but Salonga dives into side control.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Death is looking to regain half guard here but Salonga keeps moving and retains side control.
Death is trying to get back to his feet.
Salonga throws an elbow but Death slips to the side and avoids it well.
Death can't do much from the bottom here.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Death tries to strike but it doesn't land.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
You can see the frustration on Death's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Death manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Death trying to control the action but Salonga is working from the bottom.
Salonga gets full guard.
Death postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Salonga keeping moving, preventing Death from controlling successfully.
Salonga is breathing heavily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Death scoring with punches to the head and body.
Death slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Death trying to control the position but Salonga is working away.
Death controlling from side mount.
Salonga is looking for a sweep.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Death scoring with punches from side control.
Death misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
Death postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Michael Death dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Salonga throws a head kick but Death moves out of range.

Salonga fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Death, pushing him back against the cage.

Salonga lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Death works his way to full guard. Good work.
Death wants to sweep here but Salonga controlling him for the moment.

Death is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Salonga defends well.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Salonga looking to pass the guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Salonga throws an elbow that misses. Death uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Salonga's guard. Nice move by Death!

Death advances position into side control!
Salonga is working to avoid the ground and pound but Death connects with a decent elbow.

Death has hold of Salonga's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Salonga seems comfortable defending it but Death has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Salonga is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Salonga is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Death couldn't care less - he's delighted!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:31 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Michael Death!
