PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Noah Mayo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Darwingh Alvarez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Noah Mayo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Darwingh Alvarez!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Cecil Peabody and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Alvarez lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Mayo circles away quickly and effectively.
Mayo tries to clinch

and Alvarez counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Mayo's guard now.
Alvarez is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Alvarez would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Alvarez's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Alvarez trying to control the position from guard on top but Mayo is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Darwingh Alvarez has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Alvarez misses with a body kick.
Mayo uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Alvarez.

Alvarez looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Mayo is looking to improve his position.
Mayo is trying to stand up here but Alvarez is controlling him well.
Alvarez thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Mayo looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Alvarez looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Mayo with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Alvarez prevents Mayo from standing back up.
Alvarez slips a nice elbow through Mayo's hands, connecting with Mayo's forehead.
Mayo really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Alvarez is looking to take a break and control but Mayo is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Alvarez throwing shots but Mayo is blocking nicely.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Alvarez connects with a nice short shot to Mayo's temple.

Mayo is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Alvarez is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Mayo is just riding it out for now. Alvarez eventually gives up the hold.
Alvarez is taking a breather. Mayo says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Alvarez is looking for a kimura but Mayo is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Alvarez to get the leverage.
Alvarez should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Alvarez thows a huge punch but Mayo dodges it nicely.
Mayo is trying to stand.
Mayo is in trouble now - Alvarez has advanced to mount!
Alvarez looking to control but Mayo is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Darwingh Alvarez dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Alvarez clinches.
Alvarez has Mayo pressed against the cage, preventing Mayo from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Alvarez throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Mayo is in close to Alvarez's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Alvarez preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Alvarez wants to sweep here but Mayo controlling him for the moment.
Mayo loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Alvarez can do anything to dispel that myth.

Alvarez has Mayo pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Alvarez pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Mayo tumbling to the mat - Alvarez dives into Mayo's guard.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Mayo in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Mayo has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Mayo trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Mayo keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Alvarez's head.
Mayo loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Mayo postures up in Alvarez's guard and throws a big left but Alvarez blocks it.
Mayo is fighting to break Alvarez's control of his arms but Alvarez is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Mayo's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Mayo working some strikes from top position.
Mayo will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Alvarez controlling Mayo's posture.
Alvarez controls Mayo momentarily but Mayo frees himself.
Alvarez looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Mayo trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Darwingh Alvarez hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Mayo showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Alvarez.
Mayo fails to land the takedown.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Mayo wants to clinch up but Alvarez keeps it at a distance.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Noah Mayo will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Alvarez throws a body kick that misses.
The fight stays on the outside here - Mayo looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Alvarez tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Mayo closes the distance and clinches.
Mayo wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Mayo can't break the clinch.
Alvarez has Mayo pressed against the cage, preventing Mayo from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Alvarez tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.

Mayo pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Alvarez throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

Alvarez rushes Mayo and presses him up against the cage.
Mayo is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Mayo is trying to push Alvarez away but Alvarez has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Mayo manages to break the clinch.
Alvarez swats away the attempt to clinch by Mayo.

Alvarez shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Mayo manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Alvarez avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Alvarez is stalling in the full guard.

Mayo wants to stand but Alvarez is controlling the position.
Alvarez working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Mayo's head.

Alvarez makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Mayo keeping moving, preventing Alvarez from controlling successfully.

Alvarez drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Mayo dives on top into guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Alvarez pulls Mayo in close to prevent any damage.
Mayo throws a strike but Alvarez rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

And that's the end of the fight!
Darwingh Alvarez comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Alvarez has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
