PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Gustavo Santos (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Keijiro Maeda (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Keijiro Maeda will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Gustavo Santos!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Keijiro Maeda!
The judges for this bout are Michael Johnstone, David Hoff and Bart Greer.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maeda shoots in looking for a takedown. Santos tries to sprawl out of it but Maeda keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Santos manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Santos closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Maeda's guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Santos stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Maeda darts in looking for a takedown but Santos gets double underhooks and turns Maeda into the cage.
Maeda fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Gustavo Santos has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Keijiro Maeda.
Santos wants to break the clinch but can't.
Santos stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.

Santos has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Maeda is trying to keep an underhook but Santos manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Santos tries to pass to full mount but Maeda defends it.
Santos performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Santos passes the guard and advances to mount!

Santos fails to move to back control.

Santos working for a submission but Maeda is keeping him at bay.
Santos looking to control and managing it successfully.
Maeda is looking to improve his position but Santos isn't that keen on the idea.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Santos controlling the pace for now.
Maeda is trying to escape the mount.
Maeda is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Santos mounts Maeda! Really nice guard pass there!

Santos stands up from mount. Strange move.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Santos feints and as Maeda raises his hands in defense, Santos changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Santos is breathing heavily.

Maeda working for a triangle but Santos defends it easily.
Maeda keeping full guard, as Santos tries to pass.
Santos is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Santos advances to half guard.
Santos passes to full mount!
Maeda working to try and regain half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Santos content just to control the position here.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Santos is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!
Maeda tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Santos paws at him with a jab and circles away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gustavo Santos dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Maeda doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Santos counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Maeda!
Maeda is trying to escape the position but Santos is controlling the position.
Santos tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
Santos controls the position from side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Maeda tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Gustavo Santos overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Santos has knee on belly and moves into mount.

Santos get's back to his feet.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Santos shoots for a double leg takedown but Maeda sprawls well. He's pushed Santos's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Maeda is defended easily by Santos.
Santos keeps the fight on the outside.
Maeda tries to clinch up.

Maeda closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Santos tries to get back to half guard but can't.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Maeda tries to stand but Santos is controlling his head.
Maeda creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Santos sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Maeda working away.
Santos gets back to half guard.
Santos might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Maeda wants to take a breather but Santos is having none of it.

Santos kicks Maeda off and gets back to his feet.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Maeda shoots in and drives through. Santos sprawls well.

Maeda shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Santos shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Santos was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
The referee asks Santos politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Santos prefers to stall for the moment though.
Maeda pushes Santos away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Santos gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Santos just content to control the position.
Santos tries to move into full mount but can't pass Maeda's legs.

Santos thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Santos controls the position.
Maeda can't do much from the bottom here.

Santos has hold of Maeda's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Maeda tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Santos cranks the arm and Maeda screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Maeda, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:59 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Gustavo Santos!
Gustavo Santos decided to thank the fans in attendance for making a great atmosphere. It seemed to go down pretty well.
