PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Matthew Godbolt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sergio Melo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Godbolt might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Trenches by Pop Evil. Melo has chosen Go To Sleep by Eminem as his entrance music. Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 13 - 1, fighting out of New York, Sergio Melo!
The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Gwen Towbar and Robert Twigg.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Melo scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
Melo takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Melo moves into range and connects with a jab.
Godbolt has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
A big right from Godbolt misses.
Godbolt misses with a two punch combination.
Godbolt throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Godbolt misses with a wild body shot.

Godbolt shoots in and gets a takedown into Melo's guard.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Melo escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Godbolt gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Godbolt makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Godbolt throws a big right hand that misses.
Godbolt stands up over Melo, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Melo lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Godbolt!
Godbolt is desperately trying to improve his position but Melo has a good base and remains in mount.

Melo jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Godbolt is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Godbolt and Melo has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Godbolt is looking for a sweep.
Godbolt is not content to let Melo control the position.

Godbolt tries to bench press Melo off him but Melo keeps the position.
Melo in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Melo tries to score with some ground and pound. Godbolt controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
You can see the frustration on Godbolt's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Godbolt is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Melo's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

Godbolt wants to control but Melo is keeping busy.
Melo prevents Godbolt from improving his position.

Melo throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Melo looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Melo takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Godbolt throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Melo is pressing down on Godbolt's thigh, looking to free his foot. Godbolt is holding on for now.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Godbolt is looking for a sweep. Melo is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Matthew Godbolt will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Godbolt ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Melo moves away.
Matthew Godbolt seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Melo lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Melo explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.
Melo scores with a kick to the body.
Melo pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Nice takedown defense from Melo. No joy for Godbolt on that attempt.
Godbolt misses with a body shot.
Godbolt rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Melo counters with a slapping leg kick.
Melo clobbers Godbolt with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Godbolt dives in for a single leg takedown but Melo sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Godbolt breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Godbolt looks to score with a jab to the body but Melo is just out of range.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Godbolt lands a nice shot to the body.
Godbolt throws a shot from downtown. Melo moves away and avoids it.

Godbolt loads up on a big right hand but Melo slips the punch.
Godbolt checks a leg kick nicely.
Melo keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Melo throws a one two combo.
Melo connects with a looping right hand.
Melo throws a head kick but Godbolt moves out of range.

Godbolt changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Godbolt tries to score a power double leg takedown but Melo sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Godbolt somewhat.

Melo tries a low kick but Godbolt avoids it.
Godbolt shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Melo as he avoids it easily.
Nice straight punches there by Melo. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Melo.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Godbolt cracks Melo with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.

Godbolt throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Godbolt misses with a hook. Melo ducked under it nicely.

Melo uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Godbolt.

Godbolt throws an overhand right that lands on Melo's shoulder, as Melo tries to avoid the shot.
Godbolt jabs Melo right on the nose. Melo blinks but takes it well.
Godbolt has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Melo.

Melo uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Godbolt.
Melo goes for a high kick. It partially lands.

It looks like Matthew Godbolt has been cut.
Godbolt shoots in looking for a takedown. Melo tries to sprawl out of it but Godbolt keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Melo manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Good leg kick by Melo there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Godbolt has a takedown stuffed.
Godbolt tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Melo was well out of range. Poor timing from Godbolt.
A slapping leg kick lands for Melo.
Ohhhhh! A huge head kick from Melo! Godbolt is out on his feet! Melo rushes in and throws more strikes. The ref is looking closely - Godbolt is covering up but the punishment is just too much and the ref steps in to stop the fight! Godbolt is staring into space, just thankful that the beatdown has ended. Brutal finish.
