PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Raphael Chapman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Achilles Junior (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Raphael Chapman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Achilles Junior!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Josh West and Ryoma Takatsuka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Junior darts in looking for a takedown but Chapman gets double underhooks and turns Junior into the cage.
Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Chapman.

Chapman has hold of one of Junior's legs. Junior is fighting the takedown attempt but Chapman gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Chapman tries to stand but Junior is controlling from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Junior is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Junior avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Chapman stands up from Junior's guard - Chapman perhaps looking for a knockout.

Junior drives through with a takedown into Chapman's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Junior throwing strikes from guard but Chapman blocks nicely.
Chapman wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Junior throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Chapman works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Junior engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

Chapman manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Junior manages to get himself to full guard.

Chapman wants to get up but he can't break Junior's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Achilles Junior.

Chapman darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Junior has his hands clasped together around Chapman's back. He's all about the action.

Junior's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Chapman is looking for a kimura but Junior is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Chapman to get the leverage.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Chapman is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Junior has managed to free his arm - good work.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Chapman gets caught flat footed, as Junior shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Chapman is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Raphael Chapman overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Junior being controlled here momentarily.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Junior accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Junior wants to control from the top but Chapman keeps moving.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Raphael Chapman just wasn't active enough.
Junior looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Junior shoots in and gets a takedown into Chapman's guard.

Junior got a little sloppy there for a moment and Chapman has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Junior has managed to get both his arms back between Chapman's legs - danger averted.
Junior throws a big right hand that misses.
Junior is working Chapman over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Chapman wants to stand but Junior is controlling the position.
Chapman keeping moving, preventing Junior from controlling successfully.
Chapman will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Junior drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Chapman manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Junior has Chapman in his guard.
Junior is trying to keep Chapman in close.

Chapman tries to stand but Junior is controlling from the bottom.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Junior manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.

Chapman has clasped his hands together around Junior's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Chapman wants to stand but Junior is controlling his arm.
Junior regains half guard, as Chapman was trying to land strikes.
Junior gets back to full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Junior utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Junior is on top in guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Junior is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Chapman managing to control the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Achilles Junior showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Junior throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Junior closes the distance and clinches up with Chapman, looking for a takedown. Junior pushes Chapman against the cage but Chapman circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Junior lunges at Chapman with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Chapman's hand.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Chapman fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Junior sprawls well initially but Chapman persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Chapman throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Junior to regain full guard.
Junior is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Junior preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Junior pulls Chapman in close to prevent any damage.
Chapman throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Chapman stopping the sweep attempt from Junior.

Chapman stands and steps away. Junior gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Junior misses with a wild combination.

Junior scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Junior takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Chapman has one foot on Junior's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.

Junior feints and as Chapman raises his hands in defense, Junior changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Junior wants to control from the top but Chapman keeps moving.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Chapman is adopting a defensive guard.
Junior in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Chapman is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Junior looking to sit in guard and control but Chapman gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

We're going to have a standup here because Raphael Chapman wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

Chapman shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Junior preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Chapman not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Raphael Chapman.
I think Chapman has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
