PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Glenn Stroud (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rick Flare (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Stroud comes to the cage accompanied by Septic Flesh - Pyramid God. Flare has chosen Also Sprach Zarathustra as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 15 - 0, fighting out of London, Glenn Stroud!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 28 - 20 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Rick Flare!
The judges for this bout are Steve Erwin, Skip Squint and Donatello Bradman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Stroud does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Stroud displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Flare.
Stroud swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Flare counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Stroud slaps away a takedown attempt from Flare, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Stroud throws a combination that misses
and Flare counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Stroud throws a right and a left that both miss.
Flare shoots in looking for a takedown. Stroud tries to sprawl out of it but Flare keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Stroud manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Glenn Stroud has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rick Flare.
Stroud throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Stroud pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Stroud has been working on his boxing with his coaches at London MMA Club in the buildup to the fight.
Stroud tries to close the distance and clinch up but Flare swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Stroud fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Stroud throws a right and a left that Flare avoids nicely.
Flare takes a shot right to the bread basket.

Flare decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Stroud blocking the ground and pound attempt from Flare.

Stroud is pressing down on Flare's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Stroud working for a triangle but Flare defends it easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Flare has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Flare with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

Stroud avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Flare chips away with some ground and pound.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Stroud is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Flare defends well.
Stroud will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Flare loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Flare is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Flare throwing strikes but missing.

Stroud has his foot on Flare's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Flare works his way back into a safe position though.
Flare stands up over Stroud, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Stroud not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Stroud has his foot on Flare's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Flare works his way back into a safe position though.
Stroud is breathing heavily.

Stroud has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Flare can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Flare engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Stroud throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Flare wants to control from the top but Stroud keeps moving.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rick Flare dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Stroud fails with an attempt to clinch.

Stroud takes the fight into the clinch.
Stroud with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.
Flare swings away with an uppercut that misses.

Stroud breaks from the clinch.
Nice takedown defense from Stroud. No joy for Flare on that attempt.

Flare shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Flare showed some decent athleticism there.
Stroud is not content to let Flare control the position.

Stroud looking for submissions off his back.
Stroud moves into full guard.

Flare got a little sloppy there for a moment and Stroud has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Flare has managed to get both his arms back between Stroud's legs - danger averted.

Flare is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Stroud is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Stroud has escaped and now he's on top!

Flare working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Stroud doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Stroud manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Stroud postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Flare wants to sweep here but Stroud controlling him for the moment.
Stroud is in close to Flare's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Flare pulls Stroud in close to his closed guard and prevents Stroud from doing any damage or advancing position.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Stroud accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Flare is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Stroud stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Flare swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Stroud stays in close to Flare's body and controls the position.
Stroud advances to half guard.
Stroud not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Stroud wants to free his trapped foot but Flare is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Flare is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Flare moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Flare wants to sweep here but Stroud controlling him for the moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Stroud doesn't manage to clinch there - Flare circles away.
Stroud thows a left - swing and a miss!

Stroud swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Glenn Stroud seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Stroud looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
The fight stays on the outside here - Stroud looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Flare ducks under a wild hook from Stroud.
Stroud takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.

Stroud fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Flare sprawls well initially but Stroud persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Flare works his way to full guard. Good work.
Flare lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Stroud!

Flare looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Stroud keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Stroud tries to hold on but Flare pushes him away.
Stroud is trying desperately to improve position.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Flare looking to control but Stroud is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Stroud tries to reverse the position but Flare maintains control.
Flare has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Stroud's face.

Oh Stroud is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Flare lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Stroud hang on?
Flare lands a heavy shot. That's hurt Stroud! Flare sees the opportunity and turns up the heat - strike after strike land to the defenseless Stroud and the ref dives in to save him! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:47 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Rick Flare!
In his post fight interview, Rick Flare started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
