PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Sung Kim (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Pertti Sparraaja (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for Sung Kim has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Sung Kim!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Pertti Sparraaja!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Johanna Lukiainen and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sparraaja dodges the punch combination from Kim.

Sparraaja tries to keep at a distance but Kim has taken the fight into the clinch.

Kim breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Sparraaja drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Kim stops Sparraaja from passing to mount.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kim avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Sparraaja.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Sparraaja is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Kim is just riding it out for now. Sparraaja eventually gives up the hold.

Kim wants to control but Sparraaja is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Sparraaja is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Kim has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Kim tries to lock up and control but Sparraaja gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Kim regains half guard.
Sparraaja is looking to advance position but Kim won't allow it.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Sparraaja frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Kim flailing away with punches but nothing is landing.
Kim is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Sparraaja lands a nice shot to the head.

Sparraaja with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Kim regains half guard.
Sparraaja uses his free foot to push down on Kim's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Kim.
Sparraaja throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Sparraaja is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Kim is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Kim regains full guard. Nicely done.

Kim escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Sparraaja gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Sparraaja passes Kim's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Sparraaja lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Sparraaja is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Kim has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Sparraaja is working away from the top position though.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Sparraaja is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Kim has managed to free his arm - good work.
Sparraaja sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Kim defending well though.
Sparraaja wants to pass to mount but Kim is defending the position.
Kim is pressing down on Sparraaja's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Sparraaja loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Kim scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.

Kim stops Sparraaja from passing to mount.
Kim gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Kim is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Sparraaja is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Sparraaja lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Sparraaja has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Kim makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!

Sparraaja closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Sparraaja moves into full mount! Kim won't be happy about that!
Sparraaja lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Kim hang on?
Kim tries to lock up and control but Sparraaja gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Pertti Sparraaja showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The ground and pound from Sparraaja seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Sparraaja is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a tringle but Kim frees his head nicely. Oh but Sparraaja has switched to an armbar! Kim is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!
