PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Geeves Armstrong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jay Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Armstrong kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Kickstart My Heart. Jay Penn has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Geeves Armstrong!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 8 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Jay Penn!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Ryoma Takatsuka and Paul Gruel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Armstrong lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.
Penn avoids the head kick by Armstrong.

Armstrong gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Penn to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Penn trying to control the position from guard on top but Armstrong is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Penn looking to pass the guard.
Armstrong keeping moving, preventing Penn from controlling successfully.
Armstrong keeping full guard, as Penn tries to pass.
Armstrong tries to land a sweep but no joy.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Penn stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Armstrong swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Armstrong has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Penn has passed into side control.

Penn is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Armstrong is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Penn looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Armstrong is looking for a sweep.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Penn is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Armstrong knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Armstrong can't do much from the bottom here.

Penn working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Penn working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.

Penn slows the pace down.
Armstrong is looking to reverse the position.

Penn is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Armstrong is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Armstrong is not content to let Penn control the position.
Penn working away.

Penn looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Penn tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Penn has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Penn tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Penn throwing shots but missing, from side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jay Penn dominated that round.
That's time! Armstrong's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Penn takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Penn shoots for a double leg takedown but Armstrong sprawls well. He's pushed Penn's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Armstrong moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
A kick lands to the mid section there for Armstrong.
Armstrong sizes up Penn with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
Penn avoids a kick to the body.
Armstrong connects with a good right hand that stumbles Penn. Penn circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Armstrong misses with a kick to the body.
Geeves Armstrong seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Penn tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Armstrong swivels and escapes.
Penn on the wrong end of a nice jab.
Armstrong looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Armstrong lands a nice looking kick to the body. Penn takes a step back to recover.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Penn checks the leg kick nicely there.
That kick from Armstrong tenderised Penn's leg. Penn is trying to keep his angry face on.

Armstrong shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
A good leg kick by Armstrong.
Armstrong throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Penn stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Penn has a takedown stuffed.
Geeves Armstrong has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jay Penn.
Armstrong pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.

Armstrong tries to sprawl but Penn drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Penn wants to free his trapped foot but Armstrong is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Jay Penn has got the better of the ground game so far.

Penn is looking for a kimura here.
Armstrong tries to get to full guard but Penn has control of the leg.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Penn seems to be working for a kimura but Armstrong defends the submission attempt.
Armstrong blocking the ground and pound attempt from Penn.
Armstrong is staying active underneath Penn, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Penn is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Penn lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Penn thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Armstrong's head.
Penn stalling.

Penn looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Penn seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Penn is looking to take a break and control but Armstrong is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Penn slows the pace down in half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Penn is trying to control the action in half guard but Armstrong is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Geeves Armstrong will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

A decent looking body kick lands there for Armstrong.

Penn avoids a kick to the body.
Armstrong dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Penn. That did some damage!
Penn fails with the takedown
and Armstrong finishes the little exchange by landing a big kick to the body.
Penn shoots in for a takedown but Armstrong shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Penn closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Armstrong quickly recovers to half guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Armstrong wants to control but Penn is keeping busy.
Armstrong is in a tricky position but he's been working on his transitions down at Brick Brawlers MMA, so we'll see if he gets out of it.

Penn is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Armstrong defends it well.
Armstrong is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Penn takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Armstrong trying to control but Penn postures up.

Penn is working for a kimura but Armstrong is defending it quite comfortably.
Penn stalling away here and it's allowed Armstrong to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Penn looking to sit in guard and control but Armstrong gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Penn is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Armstrong is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Penn manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Armstrong manages to get himself to full guard.
Penn trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Penn is pushing down on Armstrong's leg trying to pass to half guard. Armstrong is fighting to maintain full guard but Penn has managed to sneak the leg through.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Armstrong is refusing to be controlled, as Penn sits in half guard.

Penn is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Armstrong sees it coming and defends easily.

Penn wants to work for an arm triangle but Armstrong is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Penn wants to lay and pray for a moment but Armstrong keeps working.
Armstrong is looking to control Penn's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Armstrong avoid being mounted?
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Penn tries to pass the half guard into mount. Armstrong knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Jay Penn.
I think Penn has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
