PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Sidney Rhodes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nick Freeman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Sidney Rhodes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Nick Freeman!
The judges for this bout are Chris Edwards, Phil Schofield and William Gold.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Freeman fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Rhodes to the ground. Freeman is now in Rhodes's guard.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Freeman trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Rhodes is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Rhodes has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Freeman chips away with some ground and pound.
Freeman scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Rhodes keeping moving, preventing Freeman from controlling successfully.
Rhodes manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Freeman manages to get himself to full guard.

Rhodes drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Rhodes jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Freeman is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

Rhodes wants to get up but he can't break Freeman's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Rhodes tries to free his leg and advance position but Freeman is retaining full guard.
Rhodes tries to stand but Freeman is controlling from the bottom.

Rhodes postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Freeman is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Rhodes, into his guard.

Freeman is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Freeman postures up in Rhodes's guard and throws a big left but Rhodes blocks it.
Rhodes has his hands on Freeman's head, controlling the position.
Freeman trying to control but Rhodes is working from the bottom.
Rhodes is trying to keep Freeman in close.
Freeman trying to control but Rhodes is working from the bottom.
Rhodes is adopting a defensive guard.

We're going to have a standup here because Sidney Rhodes wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Freeman misses with a double jab

and Rhodes counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Rhodes wants to break the clinch but can't.
Freeman keeps control of Rhodes as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Freeman has picked Rhodes up - he's going for a ride! Freeman dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.

Rhodes is breathing heavily.

Freeman seems to be working for a kimura but Rhodes defends the submission attempt.
Rhodes is trying to control but can't.
Freeman trying to pass the guard but Rhodes defending well.

Freeman is stalling here. Rhodes is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Freeman seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Rhodes has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.
Freeman is looking for a sweep.
Freeman manages to get back to half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Rhodes is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Freeman doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Rhodes.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Rhodes gets to his feet - back to striking we go!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Nick Freeman will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


A punch combination from Freeman misses.
Rhodes falls off balance throwing a combination
and Freeman counters with a nice uppercut.

Rhodes scores with a takedown into Freeman's guard.
Freeman is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Rhodes seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Rhodes wanted to stand there but Freeman had control of the position.

Rhodes cracks Freeman with a solid left hand.
Freeman manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Rhodes is working to get back to half guard.
Freeman avoids the attempt from Rhodes to control.

Freeman working for a submission but Rhodes is keeping him at bay.

Rhodes is trying desperately to improve position.
Rhodes wants to hold on but Freeman pushes him away.
Freeman trying to control but Rhodes is having none of it.

Freeman working for a guillotine from mount but Rhodes is in no mood to give up.

Rhodes takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

Freeman tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Freeman sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Freeman looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Freeman is breathing heavily.
Rhodes really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Freeman tries to stand up but he's trapped just for the moment.
Rhodes tries to lock up and control but Freeman gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Freeman trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Rhodes keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Freeman looking to control but Rhodes is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

Rhodes wants to control but Freeman is having none of it.
Nick Freeman has got the better of the ground game so far.
Rhodes can't escape the position.
Freeman wants to control the pace but Rhodes is squirming around nicely.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Poor strikes thrown by Freeman there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

Nick Freeman showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!


Rhodes displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Freeman.

Rhodes shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Freeman napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Rhodes wants to stand but Freeman is controlling his arm.

Freeman is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Freeman wants to control but Rhodes is keeping busy.
Freeman regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Rhodes.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Rhodes accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Freeman is trying to keep Rhodes in close.
Rhodes would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Rhodes wants to control from the top but Freeman keeps moving.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Sidney Rhodes.

Freeman shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Freeman is pressing down on Rhodes's thigh, looking to free his foot. Rhodes is holding on for now.
Rhodes pushes Freeman off looking to stand but Freeman dives back in and keeps control.

Freeman is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Rhodes has managed to free his arm - good work.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Rhodes has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Freeman is working away from the top position though.
Freeman is looking to pass Rhodes's guard but actually Rhodes recovers to full guard.
Freeman wants to control from the top but Rhodes keeps moving.
Sidney Rhodes has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Nick Freeman is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Freeman is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Sidney Rhodes.
I think Freeman has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
