PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dagon Souza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, John Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Dagon Souza!
The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, John Roberts and Anthony Taglia.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Jones gets the takedown into side control.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Jones works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Jones seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Souza for as long as he can get away with.
Jones's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Jones wants to stand but Souza is controlling his arm.
Jones lands a decent elbow from side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Souza is looking to reverse the position.
We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Souza has eaten all the pies!
Souza seems a little lost for a moment, as Jones dominates the positioning.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Jones cracks Souza with a big right hand but Souza just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Jones is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Jones is working Souza over with some ground and pound from side control.
Jones trying to control the action but Souza is working from the bottom.
Jones is really struggling to control Souza but he's trying to hold on to the position.
Souza tries to bench press Jones off him but Jones keeps the position.
Jones remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Souza is looking to reverse the position.
A lull in the action here as Jones stalls from top position.

The ref stands the fighters back up. John Jones wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Jones shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Souza's guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Jones pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Souza is keeping the position for now.
Jones prevents Souza from getting back to his feet.

Jones with a flurry of punches that miss.
Jones would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Jones thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Jones trying to control but Souza is working from the bottom.

Souza is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Jones is looking to stand up but Souza won't let him.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Souza seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Souza being controlled here, momentarily.
Souza is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Jones is controlling him.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Jones with a flurry of punches that miss.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Jones stays in close to Souza's body and controls the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of John Jones.

Jones shoots in and bounces Souza off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Jones dominated that round.

Jones dips to his left and cracks Souza with an uppercut!
Souza tries to clinch but Jones is having none of it.
Jones tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Souza swivels and escapes.
No luck for Jones with that takedown attempt.
Jones fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Souza avoids it really well and circles away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Jones. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Jones gets caught flat footed, as Souza shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Souza stands over his opponent and dives in with a flying punch! Jones throws up his legs and catches Souza in a triangle! Oh this looks tight! Souza tries to escape but he's forced to tap! Wow, fantastic work there by Jones! That came out of nowhere!
