The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Emerson Jorge and Alexandre Firmino.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mercer ducks under a wild hook from Tavarez.
Tavarez looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Mercer misses with a kick to the body.
Tavarez misses with a takedown attempt
and Mercer counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Tavarez!
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Tavarez is not in a great position here, taking some shots.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Mercer seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Tavarez for as long as he can get away with.
Mercer is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Tavarez is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Mercer wants to stand but Tavarez has his arm trapped.
The strikes coming from Mercer are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Tavarez is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Mercer is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Tavarez is trying to escape and Mercer transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Tavarez is forced to tap! Nice work there by Mercer! Very nice indeed!
