PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Joey Moon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rickson Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Gracie's choice of entrance music: Chemical Brothers - Saturate. The fight MMA fans around the world have waited their entire lives for!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Joey Moon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rickson Gracie!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Felipe Paraventi and Mauricio Rocha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gracie misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Gracie shoots in but Moon avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Gracie looks gassed!

Moon closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Moon wants to pass the guard but Gracie is defending well.
Moon keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Moon works his way into side control.

Moon working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Gracie is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Moon advances to full mount.
Gracie taking shots to the head.

Moon working for a submission but Gracie is keeping him at bay.

Gracie defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Moon.
Moon lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Gracie hang on?
Moon scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Gracie?
Moon with shots to the head and body - Gracie looks very uncomfortable down there.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Moon is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Gracie can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Moon looking to control and managing it successfully.
Gracie manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Moon is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Gracie!
Moon lands a big elbow.

Moon has hold of Gracie's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Gracie manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gracie tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Moon wants to control the pace but Gracie is squirming around nicely.
A nice elbow there by Moon.

Moon working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.
Moon controlling the pace for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Moon has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Gracie's face.
Moon tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gracie can't escape the position.
Moon content just to control the position here.
Moon has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Joey Moon just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

Moon has closed the distance and engaged Gracie in a clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Gracie misses with a takedown attempt

and Moon counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Well, if Moon is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Moon seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Gracie for as long as he can get away with.
Gracie is breathing heavily.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Joey Moon just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

Moon rushes Gracie and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Moon is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Gracie can't fight it off and eventually Moon manages to take the fight to the floor. Gracie looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Moon stays in close to Gracie's body and controls the position.
Gracie keeping moving, preventing Moon from controlling successfully.
Moon passes into half guard.
Moon looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Gracie with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Joey Moon overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Moon working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Moon passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Gracie!
Moon cracks Gracie with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.

Moon looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Moon lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Moon controlling the pace for now.

Moon working for a guillotine from mount but Gracie is in no mood to give up.
Moon tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gracie manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Moon works his foot free and advances to mount.
Moon prevents Gracie from getting the reversal.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Moon cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Moon swings around for an armbar and he's got it! Wow, that came out of nowhere! What a finish!
