PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Clyde Blankenship (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jose Soares (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Clyde Blankenship!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jose Soares!
The judges for this bout are Seu Braga, Paulo Santos and Felipe Paraventi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Soares's jab looks to have found its range, popping Blankenship under the eye.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Soares.
Blankenship is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Soares has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Blankenship really is a fat lump.
Blankenship is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Soares performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Blankenship is trying to control but can't.
Soares not doing much here.
Blankenship trying to control but Soares postures up.
Soares thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Blankenship wants to get back to his feet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Soares tries to clinch but Blankenship is having none of it.

Soares scores with a takedown into Blankenship's guard.
Soares is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Blankenship wants to stand and escape but Soares is having none of it.
Soares is looking to work some ground and pound but Blankenship has wrist control.
Soares wants to control from the top but Blankenship keeps moving.
Soares stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Blankenship swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Soares postures up.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Jose Soares.
Soares throws a body punch but Blankenship moves out of range.

Soares manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Blankenship on his heels. He'll look to pass Blankenship's guard now, I'm sure.
Blankenship has control of Soares's left arm, preventing Soares from doing any damage.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Blankenship thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Soares stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Blankenship swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
No luck for Blankenship with that takedown attempt.

Blankenship gets caught napping as Soares dives in and scores a takedown. Blankenship manages to retain guard.
Blankenship is looking to stand up but Soares isn't so interested in that idea.
Blankenship utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Soares tries to stand but Blankenship is controlling from the bottom.
Blankenship wants to stand up but Soares is controlling him.
Soares wants to control from the top but Blankenship keeps moving.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Soares is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Soares stops Blankenship from standing up.
Blankenship pulls Soares in close to prevent any damage.
Blankenship wants to control but Soares passes easily into half guard.
Soares slows the pace down in half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Blankenship wants to improve his position but Soares is controlling well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Soares shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Blankenship napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Blankenship is not content to let Soares control the position.

Soares decides to stand back up. Soares steps back and let's Blankenship get back to his feet.

Soares fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Blankenship sprawls well initially but Soares persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Soares is trying to control. Blankenship wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Blankenship is trying is best to control the position here.

Blankenship has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Soares is working away from the top position though.
Blankenship wants to get back to his feet.
Still in half guard, Soares seems content to control.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Jose Soares.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Blankenship.
Blankenship takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Soares throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Blankenship tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Soares is in Blankenship's guard.

Blankenship is working an open guard so Soares takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Soares feints and as Blankenship raises his hands in defense, Soares changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Blankenship holds on and takes a little breather.
Blankenship might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Blankenship has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Soares is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.

Blankenship pulls guard effortlessly.
Jose Soares has got the better of the ground game so far.
Blankenship is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Soares is controlling him.
Soares not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Soares decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Blankenship, up you get!

Soares changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Blankenship looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Blankenship pushes Soares away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Soares gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Soares working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Soares tries to move into full mount but can't pass Blankenship's legs.
Soares is trying to ground and pound but Blankenship uses the momentary lack of control by Soares to regain half guard.
Blankenship manages to get to full guard.

Blankenship wants to stand up but Soares is controlling him.
Soares trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Well Soares has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
