PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Johnie Rex (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gerrard Ramsey (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Johnie Rex!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Gerrard Ramsey!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Micheangelo Fripello and Roger Salmon.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ramsey fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Ramsey shoots in for a takedown but Rex shows good takedown defense.
Ramsey shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Johnie Rex has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Gerrard Ramsey.
Ramsey shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Rex but Rex pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Ramsey shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Rex pinned against the cage. Rex gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Rex tries a head kick but it misses.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Rex is defended easily by Ramsey.
Ramsey throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Rex's waist but Rex gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Ramsey off to one side.

Rex drops Ramsey with a left right combo! Rex follows him down to the ground into side control.


Ramsey is rocked!


It looks like Gerrard Ramsey has been cut.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Rex throwing shots but missing, from side control.
Ramsey is still in real trouble! Can Rex finish him?
Check out the look on Rex's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!

Rex is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Ramsey has escaped the position, nice work there.
Ramsey seems to have recovered his senses.
Ramsey looks winded!
Rex throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Rex sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Ramsey is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Rex postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Ramsey trying his best to control but Rex has mounted him.

Rex jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Ramsey manages to avoid the submission attempt.
Ramsey is not content to let Rex control the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Rex thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rex staying calm.
Ramsey manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Ramsey throws a strike but Rex avoids it easily and moves to full guard.

Rex escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Ramsey gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Ramsey content to stall in guard here.
Rex manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Ramsey manages to get himself to full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Rex wants to control from the top but Ramsey keeps moving.
Ramsey utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Ramsey is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Ramsey had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Rex defends it easily.
Ramsey keeping moving, preventing Rex from controlling successfully.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Johnie Rex dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Gerrard Ramsey's cut.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Rex doesn't manage to clinch there - Ramsey circles away.
Rex tries to clinch but Ramsey is having none of it.
Rex throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Ramsey's waist but Ramsey gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Rex off to one side.
Ramsey tries for a takedown but Rex sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Ramsey gets tackled into the cage by Rex. Rex maintains the clinch.

Rex pulls guard.

Ramsey drops back looking for a leg! Rex is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Rex manages to kick Ramsey off! Ramsey jumps back into Rex's guard.
Rex looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Ramsey puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Rex avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Ramsey.
Rex gets full guard.
Ramsey's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Ramsey wants to control from the top but Rex keeps moving.
Rex is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Rex seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Ramsey does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Rex is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Ramsey trying to hold on to Rex's head to control him but Rex postures up.
Ramsey manages to get to full guard.
Rex stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Ramsey swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Rex won't allow Ramsey to get back to his feet.

Ramsey has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Rex can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Rex throws a strike aimed at the side of Ramsey's head but Ramsey avoids it well.
Rex tries to stand but Ramsey is controlling his head.
Rex working away.
Rex is looking to take a break and control but Ramsey is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
You can see the frustration on Ramsey's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!



Rex gets tackled into the cage by Ramsey. Ramsey maintains the clinch.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
Ramsey can't break the clinch.
Rex goes for a takedown in the clinch but Ramsey prevents it.
Ramsey is pushing Rex up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.

Ramsey has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Rex uses from the top position.
Ramsey seems keen to control Rex's posture.

Rex trying to control the position from guard on top but Ramsey is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Rex throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Ramsey works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Rex won't allow Ramsey to get back to his feet.
Ramsey takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Johnie Rex wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Rex tries to clinch up but Ramsey circles away and keeps his distance.

Ramsey misses with an attempted mid kick.
Rex fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Ramsey avoids it really well and circles away.
Ramsey will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Rex shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Ramsey sprawls well. Ramsey wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Rex gets slowly back to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Johnie Rex. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Ramsey has closed the distance and engaged Rex in a clinch.
Rex trying to control the position but instead, Ramsey has worked for underhooks and has pushed Rex into the cage.

Ramsey drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
With the fighters up against the cage, Ramsey throws an elbow but misses.
Ramsey drops down looking for an ankle pick but Rex pulls his leg out and moves away.
Ramsey stuffs the takedown.
The fight stays on the outside here - Rex looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Rex shoots in looking for a takedown but Ramsey manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Rex's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Johnie Rex is winning the standup battle so far.
Ramsey shoots in and drives through. Rex sprawls well.
Ramsey dives in for a single leg takedown but Rex sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
A battle for position here, against the cage.
Rex tries to pull guard but Ramsey holds him up against the cage and eventually Rex drops back down to his feet.
A left hand lands to the body for Ramsey.

Ramsey pulls Rex into guard.
Rex passes easily into side control. Nice work.

And that's the end of the fight!
Gerrard Ramsey comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Rex has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
