PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Eric Shun (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rasul Khasbulaev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rasul Khasbulaev is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Eric Shun!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Rasul Khasbulaev!
The judges for this bout are Roosa Järviläinen, Matti Vanhoillinen and Ben Zyskovitsi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Khasbulaev is defended easily by Shun.

and Shun counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Shun.
Khasbulaev is looking for a takedown.
Eric Shun has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rasul Khasbulaev.
Khasbulaev wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Khasbulaev fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Khasbulaev has Shun pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Shun manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Khasbulaev tries to score a body lock takedown but Shun shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Khasbulaev is trying to drag Shun to the mat but Shun just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Shun manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Shun wants to get back to his feet but Khasbulaev is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

and Shun counters with a big head kick but Khasbulaev shrugs it off.

Shun shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Shun accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Shun closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Shun prevents Khasbulaev from escaping the position.
Shun postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Khasbulaev is trying to get back to his feet.
Khasbulaev is holding Shun down, trying to stall.
Khasbulaev tries to get back to half guard but can't.
You can see the frustration on Khasbulaev's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Khasbulaev manages to work his way to half guard, despite Shun's best efforts.
Shun scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Shun landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.

Shun stops Khasbulaev from getting back to his feet.
Shun is trying to control the action in half guard but Khasbulaev is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Shun is taking a breather. Khasbulaev says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Khasbulaev is looking for a sweep. Shun is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Shun knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Khasbulaev on the ground.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Eric Shun.
Khasbulaev doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Shun counters with a head kick.

Shun fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Khasbulaev to the ground. Shun is now in Khasbulaev's guard.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Khasbulaev is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Shun postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

That was a close round but I would say that Eric Shun will probably get the nod.

Khasbulaev misses with a takedown attempt

and Shun counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Shun stays in close to Khasbulaev's body and controls the position.
Khasbulaev pulls Shun in close to prevent any damage.
Shun not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Eric Shun has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

Shun rushes Khasbulaev and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Shun blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Khasbulaev wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Shun jumps guard and drags Khasbulaev to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Shun is staying active underneath Khasbulaev, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Rasul Khasbulaev hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Shun shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Khasbulaev is trying to defend but Shun finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Khasbulaev is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Shun's shoulder. That is not cool.
Shun on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Shun tries to get out of the position.
Khasbulaev works to advance to full mount. Shun defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.
Shun is trying desperately to improve position.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
