PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Mat Kowalak (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Koji Sobando (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Mat Kowalak!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 7 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Koji Sobando!
The judges for this bout are Winston Alpacca, Michael Johnstone and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A swing and a miss from Sobando.
Kowalak tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Sobando swivels and escapes.
Kowalak looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Sobando is fending him off so far but Kowalak persists. Nope, Sobando circles away and we're back to standing.

Sobando clinches up with Kowalak and pushes him back against the cage.
Kowalak tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Sobando smiles and moves away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mat Kowalak. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Sobando throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Kowalak counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Kowalak is trying to control the action in half guard but Sobando is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Sobando working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Kowalak doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Kowalak manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Kowalak accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Kowalak is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Sobando is just riding it out for now. Kowalak eventually gives up the hold.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Kowalak throws some wild stikes that Sobando manages to avoid easily.
Sobando tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Sobando is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Kowalak looking to control but Sobando is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

Sobando is squirming around, avoiding Kowalak's attempts to control the action.

Kowalak has control of Sobando's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Sobando regains control of the situation pretty easily.

That was a close second round but I would say that Mat Kowalak will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Sobando throws a series of punches but Kowalak avoids them all with ease.

Sobando shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Kowalak but Kowalak pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Kowalak has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Kowalak there as he acknowledges the shot.

Kowalak rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Sobando moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Kowalak dodges the punch combination from Sobando.
Sobando will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

and Kowalak decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Sobando's guard.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Kowalak, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
